New Les Paul coming, need pickup advice

So I decided to buy a Gibson Les Paul Doublecut Standard Plus. I'm having trouble deciding what kind of pickups I want to put in it. It has a chambered body, so I need to factor that into my decision. I know I want to put an SD Jazz in the neck (simply because it's my favorite neck pickup of all time). I'd like a bridge pickup that can well, basically do it all. I mainly play metal, but I want a pickup that sounds good clean. My main concern is midrange. I want a pickup that has defined midrange without an emphasis on low end. I like to let my bassist handle the lows. I thought about the Livewire metal but that might be too much mids and wouldn't blend with the jazz very well. I'd like something high gain so I don't have to turn my amp distortion up as much. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

To me you've just described exactly what a JB is pretty much great at doing.

JB dude!

Re: New Les Paul coming, need pickup advice

yea angus is right, the jb matches perfect with the jazz and has good midrange not much bass and sounds good clean and great dirty

Custom 5/Jazz. If you don't like it in your new guitar, I'll cut my weiner off with a rusty knife. That's how sure I am that you'll like it. :scared:

now that is some kinda endorsement if i ever heard one !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! damn joneser your killin' me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CC - Agressive, lots of midrange, sounds good clean

The JB might work for you also, but I always think of something with an a2 magnet when someone is looking for present mids, without a lot of bass.

Before anybody goes taking a knife to their private parts... I'd say get the guitar. Listen to it acoustically. Play it plugged in at the volume you normally play at. Spend a week or two with it.

THEN, determine what's lacking. Based on that, you can determine what the right pickup is for that guitar to give you what you're looking for.

(Then, get the JB...) (j/k)

Re: New Les Paul coming, need pickup advice

I like Stevo's idea of a CC. It has plenty of thick mids, round highs, and a soft bass response that works well in a chambered guitar. I think Lew has one in a semi-hollow Hamer Monaco, ask him how he likes it there.

Re: New Les Paul coming, need pickup advice

I was thinking the JB the whole time. Until you said, "something high gain". Then again, the JB is somewhat of a medium-output, so it should do fine. +1 for JB.

Do you promise? :laugh2:

Re: New Les Paul coming, need pickup advice

Damn, thanks for all the replies. I've always wanted to try the Custom 5 but I guess I'll consider the JB as well.

Re: New Les Paul coming, need pickup advice

Anyway, I think the JB is best starting point when searching for your tone. It can cover *alot* of styles and can turn into a different beast when tweaking the vol/tone knobs.

Then you'll say : "ok it sounds great, now I need more of this, and more of that" It will be far easier to choose then. Believe me.
