New Les Paul Studio PuP options

Hello all,

This is my first post so a quick introduction is in order....my name is Michael and I have been playing on and off for the past 20 years. Mostly Les Pauls with an occassional Strat for my SRV fix. My musical interests are pretty varied from blues to classic and modern rock. In a nutshell the tone I am seeking for this guitar is PAF on steroids. Something hot enough that I dont have to push my amp hard to get a decent tone, this will be a practice instrument mainly so I have to operate it at fairly low volumes. I currently have a PRS SE with a 59 in the neck and a custom SH-5 in the bridge. I recently picked up a Les Paul 50s tribute and am thinking about swapping the 490/498 out for the 59 and custom. The 490 and 498 have just never endeared themselves to me..they are high output but just lack bite to my ears, great pickups alltogether though. My dilema is this....I have an A8 magnet on hand. Do I keep the 59 in the neck and buy a Duncan 59/custom hybrid for the bridge or put the A8 in the custom with the 59 neck? Any input would be greatly appreciated and thanks for your time!!

Michael

Re: New Les Paul Studio PuP options

I'd be more inclined to try the Hybrid. The Custom 8 isn't my cup of tea. Too much low midrange. I had it in a couple guitars and ended up swapping it back to an A2 (CC). I'd be happy to take that 498T/490R set off your hands, though. So far, A2 498 and stock 490 is one of my favorite combos, almost like a CC and a A2Pro, imho.

Its available now with humbuckers. Just wanted some opinions on the Sh-5 with A8 vs the 59/custom hyrid in the bridge with a 59 in the neck?

Re: New Les Paul Studio PuP options

go with the custom for the bridge and ploay around with different magnets until you get the sound you want. If you dont like the caramic, try an alnico 8 and then go on from there

Re: New Les Paul Studio PuP options

If you like the SH-5 in your PRS I would just put one into your Studio. It may be even better in there. I love it stock, but have also made a JB/Custom hybrid which is fun too. Still, the SH5 stock is a great pup. I haven't tried one yet, but if you want less output than the SH5 but still want decent output, the 59/Custom hybrid is your best bet. Otherwise you're going into lower output territory. The A8 thing may or may not work out for you. Since you like the Custom, put it into your Studio, try it with the A8 and if you don't like it just put the ceramic back in.

Custom in the bridge is exactly what you want in my opinion. No need to mess with pure awesome.

However...might I suggest a PG to go with it in the neck?

Put that A8 in that Custom and while you're at it, put an A4 in that '59n and you'll have the best all-around set that will allow you to play from squeaky cleans to downright obnoxious hardcore just giving the right amount of gain in your amp.

I have this combo in my #1 guitar and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
