New Leslie GAS

Re: New Leslie GAS

Motion Sound has been making a rotating speaker amp/cab made specifically for guitar players for a while now and they make **** good gear.

Re: New Leslie GAS

Yea, I already have a fender vibratone.

But this is a Hammond....

But Hammond isn't known for their rotating cabs....Leslie is...in fact Laurens Hammond (inventor of the hammond organ) is reputed as *hating* rotating speaker cabinets as he said they ruined the sound of his organs :)

Guess he never listened to a Hammond B3 driving a Leslie 925 cabinet full bore!

Leslie 925 is solid state... not tube, and would connect to a 100 series organ.

The B3 or C3 would connect with a model 147 or 145 cabinet, which are all tube & have the proper amount of pins for mating! I guess you could change a 6 pin to a 9... its been done.

And there's been a guitar Leslie before... Fender Vibrotone... and with a combo preamp you can run anything into a Leslie cab...

But Hammond now owns the Leslie name - the companies have consolidated into one. Also, Hammond bought a ton of OEM Leslies over the years to build
-in to smaller organs. Whether or not Laurens liked 'em, Leslie and Hammond are nearly synoymous.

And I want one.

Re: New Leslie GAS

If I was a top recording musician and had a team of roadies when I did a world tour, then I would go for it. Looks pretty sick. But for now, 85 pounds, no thanks, I'll stick with the vibrato setting on my DejaVibe :)

Re: New Leslie GAS

The motion sound one isn't bad, but sounded a little muddy to me, just sort of gets buried in the mix a bit. I played the 1x12 one and it honestly wouldnt be that bad to move around either, 40lbs or so I'd guess.

Thing is though with it and any real rotating speaker, is that while it can sound very cool in a smaller room with the sound bouncing off everything, on a stage you totally lose the effect and have to mic it.

Some, like the Motion SOund have their own mic's and xlr outs, but then why are you carrying a 40+lb cab, much less a 85lb cab just to mic it and not get the same effect, much less even a stereo effect unless your playing a place with a nice PA

I think rotating speakers are cool, and wouldnt mind a Vibratone just for the collectable appeal, but for most peoples needs, I think they'd be better served with a simulator like the RT-20

Sounds just as good when its through a PA and much much cheaper and more practical to move.

Re: New Leslie GAS

I want one ..................and a B3 too!:friday:

Native Instruments B4

Sounds fantastic and is a blast to play around on. If your a serious kb player then yeah I could see wanting the real thing, but if your a guitarist first and just want something fun to play around with and make some cool sounds, its well worth the cash.

Fender Vibratone is the holy grail for vintage guitar amp collectors. No pedal can match the shimmering one-of-a-kind sound that only a genuine Leslie can bring.

You do need your own amp to drive one, and I use a Fender Bassman for that!

Re: New Leslie GAS

I would go for the G-27 (no amp), you do not need an amp in a Leslie if you are using it for guitar. But there is a lot to consider... We have a "real Leslie" that we converted for guitar. We got rid of the amp, replaced the 15" Jensen field coil, and replaced the compression driver up top. Now we can use it for anything (including vocals) that we want to. It sounds totally amazing, but it is big and hard to move around. We bought a Motion Sound Spin Doctor, again no amp, and it is foot switchable. This is an easier, smaller alternative, but is still like hauling another guitar amp. Everybody that plugs into these speakers just cannot believe how they sound. No pedal sounds like that, they can't. But when you take them out of a studio situation, all bets are off. The MS has an internal mic. but to me that does not sound as good as external mic'ing. I hate to say it, but a gigging guitar player (and others have said this already) will be better served by one of the many pedals available. It can be pretty difficult to capture the magic of the "Leslie's" on stage. If you are The Black Crowes, have a road/sound crew, do good sound checks on a decent size stage.... then yes you can make the magic work. Most of us are not in that position unfortunately.
IMHO
Good Luck
