New LP pickups

I put (and by "I" I actually mean my good friend Scott) a Custom 5 in the bridge and a Phat Cat in the neck of my Les Paul yesterday and I must say it totally rules. I've always struggled a little with two-humbucker Les Pauls because if I get the bridge pickup sounding the way I want it, the neck pickup is usally too dark, and vice-versa. The Phat Cat makes it easy to get a clear, punchy neck-pickup tone while keeping the barking, snarling bridge humbucker sound that I love. Oh yeah--the middle position is better than ever. This guitar can just cover a lot more sonic territory now. Love it!

Re: New LP pickups

Glad to hear it sounds so good.

I've been wanting to put a Cat in the neck of my one of my Pauls, too, but I'm not sure whether to use a neck version or a bridge version. Which did you use? Do you think it would make an audible difference?

How about posting some klipz to hear this audio nirvana?

Re: New LP pickups

I went with the neck model--couldn't tell you what the difference in sound would be had I used a bridge Phat Cat. As it stands now, I wouldn't change it. I definitely recommend the neck Phat Cat.

Cool. Didn't Neil Young have a humbucker (or maybe a mini hum) in the bridge with a P90 in the neck on his black Les Paul? I think the man was on to something.

Re: New LP pickups

The neck is plenty fat and bordering on muddy (which is why I had mine rewound about 1k lower). The bridge would be way too hot and muddy for the neck.

Nice avatar, by the way! LOL

I've used nickel Custom 5/59 for years, and love it. To me, it's a better set for LP's than a 59 set. I recently discovered that the Jazz Bridge is a great neck pickup to mate with Customs too. It bridges the gap between the Jazz N and 59N. I can see why you'd like the Phatcat too.

My Goldtop LP rules with the new Brobucker/Jazz B in neck pos.
