New magnet suggestions for my '59b?

So, I find the '59b in my LP Studio to be too trebly. It's sounds nice when I roll off the volume and tone on the guitar, but it's too shrill with the tone and volume rolled all the way on "10." I also find that it's missing some bass, and midrange (I'd especially like more midrange).

It's paired with a JazzN that I like just the way it is.

What mags do you suggest I try? Should I try un-oriented/charged/polished/unpolished etc...?

Re: New magnet suggestions for my '59b?

I've been reading tons of threads and it seems like LtKojak swears by the A4 JazzN paired with an A8 '59b. It sounds like an interesting mod. Can someone elaborate on the tonal characteristics of the combo?

I tried an A8 in my 59B. I missed the original tone and put the A5 back in but it sounds like you might like it.

You could try the UOA5 mag, but I don't think you'll get what you're asking for.

An A8 will get you a lot closer, plus it'll add a masculine vocal quality not present in that p'up at all.

Because swapping mags does NOT break the bank in any way, just get a good supply of differents mags, so you won't have to believe anything they tell you; you can hear it for yourself.

HTH,

Yea, I was thinking about picking up this assortment of mags:

If you're going for an assortment you should try UOA5 first (why? bc I selfishly want to hear more feedback about it) then A8.

+1. Get several so you're sure to have the one thet works best. Bright bridge PAF's are a common topic. First I'd try a roughcast A5 and roughcast A4. If one of those didn't do it, I'd also try a UOA5, A2, or A8. Between those five magnet lies your solution. Cost you a little over $10, and you have spares for other HB's and P-90's.

Nice one. I'm as excited to try these different mags as much as I am when I buy a new PuP.

Question: Should that A8 be polished, semi-polished UO? I don't understand the difference between all these options.

Franknfilms, I'll try an UOA5 just for you bud!

When you're trying different magnets, you really are trying different PU's, just doesn't cost you a much.

Roughcast A8's are more 'unpolished' than roughcast, which is not quite smooth, but not very rough either. You have a few indentations and maybe some grinding marks. The difference between polished and 'roughcast' (unpolished) A8's is not a lot, but I'm switching my A8's to 'roughcast' anyways.

Roughcast A2's, A3's, and A5's are very rough; bumpy with many impressions of sand grains, all of which makes for a more varied and complex magnetic field. A4's can be polished, unpolished, and roughcast.

At my request, Addicition FX just got in some really nice and rough A4's. If you want those, request them specifically, otherwise you may get an unpolished A4.

This makes more sense now. I'm curious to hear what the A4 rough mag will sound like in my JazzN paired up with the A8 cast unpolished mag in the '59B.

I think this Addiction FX set will do the trick. That has the A4 mags and A8 mags you suggest right?

Re: New magnet suggestions for my '59b?

I'm using high output pickups, so apples and oranges, but I really, really like the UOA5. The A8 is truly evil sounding in a hot pickup, but it might be best suited to lower output pickups.

I have the designed version of the jazz with a A4, I like it OK, but I think I'm gonna try a polished A2 before I call it good, I could use a smidge more mids and a bit less top out of it.

Re: New magnet suggestions for my '59b?

Should I buy these magnets fully charged?

Yeah, don't forget to specify fully charged.

It's been my experience that in the process of packaging, sending, etc, the magnets lose just the right amount of Gauss to sound sweet from the moment you open the package.
