New member saying hello as well as looking for SG pickup suggestions

First off i would like to say hello to the forum..As well as thank you all for info i have gotten in the past from lurking the site ...

I'm a contributing member at both TGP and the Fender Stratocaster forum but mostly post on Blues music forum's...

Here is what i got going on.. For many years now i have primarily played Stratocasters..My only humbucker equipped guitar until a recent SG purchase is a SSH equipped Strat.

Prior to my switch to strats my go to guitar was always a Gibson SG.I love the tones of Les Paul's but i was never able to bond with one..

I have been wanting another SG for sometime now an my 45th birthday was last week.It just so happened the weekend before my birthday a friend had info on a excellent condition 2000 Gibson SG Special for a very low price. This is the high gloss version with what i believe is a Ebony fret board it is 100% stock and from what Gibson told me today it is loaded with a 490R in the neck and a 498T in the bridge.I forgot to ask what value tone and volume pots are in it so if anyone know the answer to this also i would appreciate it..

It was love at first play for me and this SG .It was like having sex with that high school crush that broke my heart 30 years ago ..It just felt so right in my hands..

Bottom line its been many years since i have researched humbuckers for a SG or any other mahogany wood guitar..Lets put it this way the last time i switched a SG pickup the super 70's distortion was the new hot pickup..

What i am looking for in the neck position is a pickup thats warm without getting muddy and is capable a good clean tone as well as a raunchy blues crunch tone...

The stock 490r is a little to bright for my taste and does mud up some although i can't say it necessarily sounds bad i just feel there is better out there..

In the bridge position i would like something capable of excellent sustain very articulate when distorted capable of decent clean leads but mostly for Gary Moore type moderately hot leads..I would like moderate output but in a blues rock sort of way..The best way for me to say it is a SG version of Gary Moore's tone in the bridge......

This guitar will be used primarily as a stage guitar..Playing blues and blues based rock as well as some country rock and the occasional hard rock song..

It also maybe used for limited slide work...

To give you a idea of what this guitar will be covering here are some of my influences that use humbucker equipped guitars..
Primarily Gary Moore (absolutely love his tone) Warren Haynes,Billy Gibbons,Angus Young/Malcom Young,Eric Clapton with Cream and the Blues Breakers,Bo Diddley,John lee Hooker,Pat Travers and other dirt or raunchy blues players..

Yes i know most of these play Les Paul's but it gives you and idea..

I do have some knowledge of the Seymour Duncan Pearly gate in a fat strat ..It is a tremendous pickup and i'm curious what your feelings are using them also in my SG?

My Amps are ...

Marshall Plexi head

Marshall JCM800 2204 combo (speaker is a Celestion Greenback)

Fender 65 Bassman head

Fender Twin Reverb stock Fender/Weber or Jensen speakers

(The Plexi and Bassman are the most used)

Cabs:

Slant and straight Avatar 4x12 with two Vintage 30's and two G12 Celestion's in a x pattern in both cabs ...

Avatar 2x12 loaded with 2 G12's Celestion's...

Effects

Budda Wah, Crest Audio Dallas Arbiter original Fuzz Face, Paul Cochrane Tim Overdrive, Wilson Haze Vibe, Jacques Prisoner Analog Delay, Nuenbauer Wet Reverb...

Sorry this is so long i felt it was necessary to share all the relevant information i could...Thanks for any help on this ..

P.S If some one knows what are the stock volume and tone pots on a stock 200o Gibson SG Special (Gloss model not faded ) this would be a big help also..

Re: New member saying hello as well as looking for SG pickup suggestions

I would go with the PG Set....I think it would work well for you.....

Re: New member saying hello as well as looking for SG pickup suggestions

Your pots should be 500k (standard value for humbuckers).

You might try a Jazz in the neck, with a Pearly Gates in the bridge.

I have that pair in a custom built LP-style guitar with a similar wood arrangement (all mahogany (chambered body instead of solid) with ebony fretboard), and I'm quite happy with them (though I am about to put in a JB).

Re: New member saying hello as well as looking for SG pickup suggestions

Any good PAF will get you there. Pearly Gates, Antiquities, 59's...
