I want to put a new nut on one of my Yamaha electric guitars. It's a cheap guitar but I like it. And I messed up the nut by overfiling it. I know about repairs with bone and epoxy, but I'm thinking to just put a new nut on it.

I got the part number from Yamaha but they don't stock it. They said it was a 41millimeter nut R250 (IV). Anybody know what R250 refers to? Maybe radius??

I'm guessing this is a pretty standard plastic nut.

I would suggest getting a bone nut put in. I replaced my stock plastic one from my Les Paul with a bone one and the tone difference was amazing! Mosty guitar repair places can do this for you. The blank bone slab was $5 and it was like $40-50 for the tech to file and install it. Well worth it!

Just to stir... is there any particular kind of bone that, tonally is superior. Leg versus rib. Cow vs kangaroo? Or is bone as in bone china? Lastly, is it un-vegatarian to play bone equipped guitars? LOL

That's a good thing to try. I'll ask my repair guy what he thinks. The cheap plastic one will probably cost like $5 anyway.

Interesting possibility. Have you tried Earvana? On their site it looks like you will be altering the guitar permanently. One picture shows a new nut with screws into the the fretboard.

I have them on two guitars, they require no modifications to the guitar and they work very well. They do not screw into the fretboard in most cases, unless you have a shallow nut slot. They have a bottom piece that glues in like a traditional nut, then the top piece screws on. They are easy enough to install that you can do it yourself.

That sounds good. If you ever need a another new nut, you just unscrew the old earvana nut and screw on a new.
