Someone offered me silly money for my Menatone Fish Factory (almost enough to pick up a Tele I had my eye on) so I thought sod it, I'll sell it and get the Tele.
Which I did.
Which left me OD-less.
I picked up a Monte Allums-modded Boss Blues Driver cheap, but that did not do it for me at all so I went back on the hunt. I was after a Tubescreamer-style pedal without breaking the bank...and I found the Reaper.
This guy had made two a BYOC overdrive clones with an identical circuit based on the Tubecreamer but with higher quality parts and true bypass. It is a perfect clone of the original but with the Clay Jones MODS applied to it - Wima Capacitors, metal film resistors throughout with carbon comp resistors, a Burr Brown IC. He decided to sell the second one and I thought I'd try it out - at £64 I figured I could always make my money back.
This thing is outstanding: clarity is incredible and it has a tad more warmth than both the original TS I had back in the day and the Menatone 'Red Snapper' side of the Fish Factory. OK, so it doesn't have the versatility of the 2-stage Factory, but at less than 25% of the cost it is simply stunning.
It looks rubbish, but there you go...sounds great with the new Karmacaster too.
