New Pickups In My 57' RI Les Paul

Dean Hardtail Fanologist
I had my mind set on putting Seth Lovers in this guitar, as I have a double cream set, or so I thought. Turns out I have two bridge pups in cream and one neck in zebra. I was going to put covers on anyhow, so no issue. But, I had already installed a Seth set in my Spalted Maple Dean Hardball, so I'm out of luck on that. Then I thought about my Antiquity set.... also DC, and then I had a brainstorm.

About 2 years ago I ran into a pickup seller on Reverb named CM Daugherty. He was selling 50's Tribute PAF replica's, 60's replicas and several other Humbuckers sets which I can't recall now... but all replica's of Gibson PAF's and T-Tops, in addition to single coil strat and Tele replicas. I emailed him for more info and we wound up talking on the phone and I ordered a set of these:

CM Daugherty Hand Wound Custom 50's PAF Tribute Set - 8.2-8.4k bridge, 7.5k neck, bare nickel covers to be aged, cream Butyrate bobbins, pure hand wound with slight scatter wind, covers installed.

They actually came out to be 8.2 B and 7.6 N. It took him longer than expected to deliver them to me, and in the meantime I had bought my Greenie set to put in my favorite Hardtail, so the Daugherty set just went into my pickup stash, until now.

I put them in the 57' yesterday and tested them through the DSL40c. I am really surprised and incredibly happy with these pickups so far. I'm still dialing them in, but the bridge pickup has a nice bright bite without being harsh along with good bass and mid push. The neck pickup is clear and clean, with nice warmth and smooth tone with gain. It is a tad bit wooly at times though, so I'm going to keep lowering it until I find it's sweet spot. I think the bridge is set nearly perfectly, but I'll sill experiment a bit. Great set of pickups.

This is the first set of non Duncan pickups I've bought since I joined this board in 2001 or 2002. They are really well made to all vintage specs, correct materials and solidly built. He even engraved the baseplate "To my friend Jeff Haggard", along with the date, a "B" for the bridge and an "N" for the neck and a Psalms number, though I can't remember which one right now. I thought it was a nice touch.

The only thing I cannot remember and it's not on my invoice or in my emails, is what type of magnets he used. I believe he offered a wide range of all the typical mag types from A2 to UOA5. I'm pretty sure his 50's tribute set was A2 or A4....maybe. His website isn't active any longer and the only way to reach him and order pickups is now through Facebook, and I don't have an account. I'm not that concerned with what mags are in them, as long as they sound this good.

At any rate, these are a fantastic set of pickups and Mike Daugherty is a good winder. If you're looking for an alternate PAF set, you should at least check him out on Facebook. They were only $199 for the set, wound however I wanted, any color bobbins and $25 extra for aged cover and screws. Nice deal.

I actually have a set of his singles I bought off ebay.

Re: New Pickups In My 57' RI Les Paul

These get better every day I mess with them. Very much like a Seth neck, but warmer without losing the clarity.... but not like an Antiquity. The bridge is a fatter Seth Lover with more mids and bite. I'm normally not a fan of anything but Seymour Duncan, but these surprise me. I don't plan on buying any more, as I still want to try some stuff like the SNS and WLH plus another set or two from MJ in the custom shop, so that takes care of any foreseeable pickup needs, but if you run into these or are looking for an alternative for whatever reason..... they're worth checking out.

im waiting on a sns set cause i gotta try it. the wlh set is great. the neck pup is fantastic in the few guitars ive tried it in. the bridge is always good but really found its home in a prs se. pretty much everything i own has either duncans or something i wound in it these days. there are plenty of other good pups out there but i already have waaay more pups than ill ever need and way more wire than ill use in the next 10 years

Every time I play these pickups I'm more and more impressed. Similar to the Seth's and Antiquities that I love, but with a tad more depth and openness. Hard to describe. The Seth's are very similar, but maybe a little less vocal.

Hard to beat a well dialed in reissue LP. Glad these pickups worked out for you. You said these are a tad bit more open than the Seths, were they covered as well?

I had a ton of options actually, including aged, shiny nickel or raw nickel, in addition to uncovered. I chose double crème bobbins, medium aged nickel cover and screws, cover installed and not potted. Its too bad his website is defunct and he's only selling on Facebook. I can't find the descriptions of different HB's or their specs and options, like the website had.

However, he will build you literally anything you want. Just describe the tone your after and he can do it.

It is really nice having an RI with a super dialed in set of pups. I nearly just put the antiquities in this, but something was nagging me about these pickups. It's also entirely possible that this specific guitar will make any set of PAF's sound good. Food for thought.

I've always been so loyal to SD, I really feel a bit guilty about using then posting about non SD pickups, but I guess the tone search sometimes supersedes brand loyalty.

Rock on everyone.
