I had my mind set on putting Seth Lovers in this guitar, as I have a double cream set, or so I thought. Turns out I have two bridge pups in cream and one neck in zebra. I was going to put covers on anyhow, so no issue. But, I had already installed a Seth set in my Spalted Maple Dean Hardball, so I'm out of luck on that. Then I thought about my Antiquity set.... also DC, and then I had a brainstorm.
About 2 years ago I ran into a pickup seller on Reverb named CM Daugherty. He was selling 50's Tribute PAF replica's, 60's replicas and several other Humbuckers sets which I can't recall now... but all replica's of Gibson PAF's and T-Tops, in addition to single coil strat and Tele replicas. I emailed him for more info and we wound up talking on the phone and I ordered a set of these:
CM Daugherty Hand Wound Custom 50's PAF Tribute Set - 8.2-8.4k bridge, 7.5k neck, bare nickel covers to be aged, cream Butyrate bobbins, pure hand wound with slight scatter wind, covers installed.
They actually came out to be 8.2 B and 7.6 N. It took him longer than expected to deliver them to me, and in the meantime I had bought my Greenie set to put in my favorite Hardtail, so the Daugherty set just went into my pickup stash, until now.
I put them in the 57' yesterday and tested them through the DSL40c. I am really surprised and incredibly happy with these pickups so far. I'm still dialing them in, but the bridge pickup has a nice bright bite without being harsh along with good bass and mid push. The neck pickup is clear and clean, with nice warmth and smooth tone with gain. It is a tad bit wooly at times though, so I'm going to keep lowering it until I find it's sweet spot. I think the bridge is set nearly perfectly, but I'll sill experiment a bit. Great set of pickups.
This is the first set of non Duncan pickups I've bought since I joined this board in 2001 or 2002. They are really well made to all vintage specs, correct materials and solidly built. He even engraved the baseplate "To my friend Jeff Haggard", along with the date, a "B" for the bridge and an "N" for the neck and a Psalms number, though I can't remember which one right now. I thought it was a nice touch.
The only thing I cannot remember and it's not on my invoice or in my emails, is what type of magnets he used. I believe he offered a wide range of all the typical mag types from A2 to UOA5. I'm pretty sure his 50's tribute set was A2 or A4....maybe. His website isn't active any longer and the only way to reach him and order pickups is now through Facebook, and I don't have an account. I'm not that concerned with what mags are in them, as long as they sound this good.
At any rate, these are a fantastic set of pickups and Mike Daugherty is a good winder. If you're looking for an alternate PAF set, you should at least check him out on Facebook. They were only $199 for the set, wound however I wanted, any color bobbins and $25 extra for aged cover and screws. Nice deal.
