New project body incoming

Re: New project body incoming

What is that wood???

Got a trashy looking strat body laying around just like it, right down to the blown out interior routs....got it for like $10 but always felt reluctant to use it, suspecting that putting effort into it would only yield disappointing results

No idea what kind of wood (it's completely painted over), and honestly don't really care much.

I know, I know... it makes a difference...

...but not as much difference as pickups and rig settings. I'm confident I can get a decent sound out of it. [emoji6]

Well do tell what kinda results it yields.... maybe it'll finally motivate me to finish Blackmore-scalloping an odd neck I have laying around - stalled for years - and bolt it onto that similar body I have laying around

Re: New project body incoming

Been too much going on for the past few months to be able to make any progress, and my daughter chickened out of the cartoon cow idea.

I did some playing around with photoshop though, and at least I have a plan to follow now:

The purple will be a metal flake and the pickups are going to be GFS ProTubes (humbuckers and single in the center). Oh yeah, and here’s the neck I’m thinking about using:

One of these days I’ll get this thing done!

So my girls pooled their money to buy me the neck in my last post for Christmas!

I've also changed things up again for the end look... gonna go for a goldtop. Here's a pic of the first coat using a gold rattle can, but I also picked up a can of "sparkle" gold for the topcoat (just on the front I think). Then it'll be plenty of coats of clear over that.

Gonna need a little drip sanding and another coat or two... but I like it!

Here’s my vision of the finished product:

The "vision" pic doesn't do justice to the gold of course, but it kinda gets the point across. The clear on the headstock looks REALLY nice now that I have it in front of me, so I'll probably skip painting it.

I have a set of Ibanez ACH pickups that I took out of my AS83 that I'm gonna try first, and the center pup will be a S-D Hot Stack for Strat that I have hanging around. I found the ACHs to be kinda bland in my semi-hollow, but who knows... maybe they'll be okay in a solid body. If not, they'll work until I can get something else and besides, it pulls the budget for this build down substantially to use pickups I already have.

The new neck has a light coat of clear over the fretboard, which is fine, but I'm toying with putting more on to bring the shine up a bit. If not, what should I use for oiling it... lemon oil like I use for my rosewood boards, or something else?

I've never oiled any of my maple boards, so I couldn't tell you what to put on it. What I can tell you is that lemon oil will turn into sticky gunk, so don't put that on there. AFAIK hard-finished maple boards not only don't need oil, they shouldn't be oiled to avoid buildup.
