New project - guitarra baja de los muertos

Wattage

High Voltologist
Doing a setup on my buddy's bass and says he wanted to do something kind of wild to it but wasn't sure what exactly. He was thinking maybe stickerbomb ala The Wildhearts but that's kind of been done to death. Well I had a few ideas and we decided to go with.....

But it'll be colored more like this

So far....

A 3-point Gibson bass bridge, on an LP body. Reminds me of my dearly-departed Triumph. :17:

Re: New project - guitarra baja de los muertos

Man, that is beautiful.

So how do you do this? (Not that I can/would do it myself; just curious on the technique) I notice the first pic had like a white drawing, but the bass is black to start with, or did you have to paint it black?; do you trace the drawing to the body? Or just visually copy it? What kind of paint is the design?

Re: New project - guitarra baja de los muertos

WAY COOL!!
Totally digging the candy skull knobs too- nice touch.
If you hurry, it could be done just in time for Dia De Los Muertos...

Re: New project - guitarra baja de los muertos

Oh it'll be done in time for Dia de los Muertos for sure, it's just about done now. Needs a few detail touches and then it'll cure for a week before it gets waxed and buffed.

The paints are enamels so the bass willl have to have a good coat of carnauba wax on it.

The first pic with the white print on it was to get an idea of the layout and proportion. The bass itself is black so I just cleaned it well and used that for the background. I transferred some of the design to the guitar but mostly just did it visually once I knew what I wanted. The paints are oil-based enamels mostly out of paint pens. Similar to sign painters enamels like One Shot. The rear cover plate is a mix of paint and metallic ink markers and was all freehand without any direct reference. I started out just making the pug skull and just kept going, I wanted a folk art vibe to it.

Wow nice work!! In my younger days, Id have said, need to drop a hit and turn on a black light and stare at it for hours... haha

Re: New project - guitarra baja de los muertos

I do!

Really happy how it turned out. I did a lot of little things to clean the bass up as well, gave it it's first setup in about 12-13 years. Had to re-glue one of the bridge posts, it kept pulling up out of the body. The 3 point bridge puts a lot of pull on the rear posts.

2 coats of carnauba wax makes the damn thing reflect EVERYTHING :smack:

De putisima madre!!

Nicest compliment you'll get from a Spaniard.

If I wasn't on the other side of the planet I'd get you to to me an SG.

Love your work, your collection and your inspiration. And your appreciation of Aussie Pub Rock.

Thanks for sharing
