New Project

I bought this project body and matching neck of the bay a few days ago with some Christmas money. Needs a lot of work but I think it'll be a good time.

I plan on refinishing it like a white Les Paul Custom and maybe a rising sun graphic in black.

I was wondering about gluing in the neck and making it a set neck, is this possible? Will it hold? I've heard glue joints are stronger than wood if done correctly so maybe it will work.

The dot inlays have got to go though. The inlays at Stew-Mac aren't too expensive but I have no idea how to put them in. I'd imagine you just have to mark where they go and mask around it and cut the slots and glue them in.

I need to buy a book I'm guessing off of Stew-Mac on doing inlays and hopefully not a refret, the pictures don't really show if it needs it or not, I hope/pray that it doesn't need one.

Re: New Project

Don't glue the neck. Properly installed, a bolt-on neck can do just fine in terms of tone, sustain, etc. And, it's far superior in terms of fixing screw-ups and making future adjustments.

Looks like a fun project.

yeah like those ibanez all access neck joint kinda.
just screw the screws in w/o the plate.

Re: New Project

Looks like a fun project. I found a real Les Paul in a pawn shop last year that was in about the same condition. It was an 84, I think, and someone had drilled into the top to add a toggle switch. They still wanted almost $1000 for it. I told him that was too much for that guitar.

"But it's an 80's Gibson, man."

Yeah, I know. I should be getting an extra discount for that. :laugh2:

Have fun with the project. Be sure to post pics throughout the project, or at least take them through the whole thing and post them at the end. I always like seeing that kind of stuff.

Re: New Project

What wood is that made out of?
