New riff demo -- prog rock (Late 70s Genesis)

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Woke up with this riff in my head; very reminiscent of late 70s Genesis, imo. LOTS of chorused guitars!! :)

Triangles were played by me, mic'd with a Cascade Fathead II ribbon mic.
Guitars are guitar > VG88 > interface
Bass is bass > SansAmp Bass Driver > interface
Drums are CLA

A word about the chord progression; it's pretty much all 1st and 2nd inversions so that the bass notes may move down, for example, but the actual chord moves 'up' in the progression.

Intro/chorus progression is:
G - GMaj7 - C - D (all with a G pedal tone on the 3rd string)

Verse progression is:
G - Am - G - Am - F - G - C - Am - F - G - C

The picking patterns are different for each section.

A word about playing the triangle: Much harder than it looks!!

Follow you, follow me..I love it!

Don't really know much about Genesis..but that's a very cool tune..KILLER recorded tones as always :D

Re: New riff demo -- prog rock (Late 70s Genesis)

How the recording finishes up will depend very much on the vocals and melody.

For an intentionally Genesis sound, the drums could do with being busier and sounding dirtier. (Tape overload or hard limiting.) As things stand, I detect a hint of "Wired For Sound" by Cliff Richard.

The pad "choir" sound, I take to be Roland VG-88. A layer of analogue synthesizer soft brass would thicken things considerably. Maybe different inversions to the choir pad. Blend it in at a lowish level.

Never said I am trying to sound like Genesis. :)

Thanks for the layering tip, will try it if the riff makes it past the demo stage...

Re: New riff demo -- prog rock (Late 70s Genesis)

cool! nice use of the triangle. what's hard - that it moves around or what? guitars sound really good.

Re: New riff demo -- prog rock (Late 70s Genesis)

Thanks!

Part of the difficulty is that it does move around a lot, making consistent hits difficult. Also, you have to time the chokes just right, and after a few measures, repetitive motion kicks in and your hands start to cramp up.

That clip has 2 triangle parts, panned left and right.

Re: New riff demo -- prog rock (Late 70s Genesis)

Not too fam with Genesis as any incarnation never appealed, so cannot spot the influence, but I am reminded of Andy Summers' playing a bit, and something in the chord progression screams "Between the Walls" to me.

My little girl got a triangle in music instrument set last year, and you are absolutely right, if you have to hit fairly frequently,, its tough to get right, and to get it to ring out correctly. Ed Grimley was a genious, I must say ;)

True!

You are not alone in hearing Summers; my singer thinks the same thing, and he is a huge Police fan.
