NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

That's a shame...

While Duncan Designed pickups were generally garbage I think it's a shame that they feel they need to go with something so lifeless and sterile as EMGs. There's tons of options from SD and Dimarzio that I know would suit alot of player.

Hahaha :lmao: Lifeless and sterile? You can't be serious. I know this is a SD website and i dont' know what your agenda is, but com'on, thats utterly rediculous.

Nope....no agenda.

I owned EMGs and I found them to be lifeless and sterile. I had them in the guitar for almost ten years to come to that conclusion, so it's not a snap judgement by any means.

It probably should of been a sign when after they got installed the guitar generally went unplayed after a few months. It seemed like everything else had tone and that guitar didn't. Every year or so I would clean the guitar up, set it up with some new strings and give it another try. Each time unless I made an effort to do it I found I would readily pick anything else than that guitar. I even thought for awhile it might be the actual guitar and not the pickups.

This past Summer I bit the bullet and replaced the entire electronics. When I went to pick it up at the shop the tech handed it to me and said I had an amazing little tone monster on my hands. He said he hadn't played a Tele with that sort of sound since he'd been working on vintage gear.

I thought he was just being polite; he wasn't. I spent weeks playing it just in awe that the sounds coming from the amp were indeed from that guitar. I still plug in and am blown away by it.

I find EMGs to be lifeless and sterile. I find the tone to be a second-rate facsimilie of what the guitar is perceived to sound like. I put in the time to make these assertions and have every right to do so; I've earned it.

I find it a shame that a company like Schecter that has the potential to grow past the demographic is has settled into hobbles themselves by using a product I find to be sub-par and the choice du jour of many that have no idea what good tone is. I find it as tragic as replaced pickups on original vintage Les Pauls, strap button holes drilled on a pre-war Martin, brass nuts on 60's Strats and Kahler-routed trems on Gibson SG's.

Anything else?

Damn, didn't mean for ya to write a book to get your point across :laugh2:

+1 Had them in a guitar for a while and didn't like them. They couldn't come close to a JB or Distortion for high gain. Most people that buy EMG actives are the ones that keep the gain on their amp at 10 all the time so they don't know any different. EMG's crunch like crazy under gain and sustain nice, but they just have no mojo whatsoever. I couldn't have a one trick pony like that in my guitar. Try playing some tasty blues or jazz on them, yuck.

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

i think somebdy at schecter had the burning desire to make there guitars just like esp and jackson

well good on ya lads you did

those fender showmasters with sds are starting to look reall good right about now

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

Schecter is in it to sell guitars... They have identified a demographic they want to shoot for... With a name like Damien series you cant deny there isnt a target audience... and that audience likes EMG's so I see it as good marketing sense...
As far as EMG's being sterile I disagree... They have their own tone... They have their own place... Like many other pickups they have a specific crowd they appeal too... and please dont say its for people who know nothing of tone... its just a matter of taste... some people drink pabst blue ribbon and love it... some people like dom perignon... is either more right...

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

I think it is a matter of taste.......i also use emgs gor 12 years now(not the 81 and btw....i have never played metal) and i still haven't found a pickup that sounds better to MY ears......i tried dimarzios and didn't like their "synthetic" sound, i tried many duncans and every model seemed to suffer in one area or another.
I would be glad if guitar manufacturers offered more choices in two crucial parts of a guitar: the neck dimensions(like gibson does with the 50's and 60's neck profile) and the pickup configuration. I would totally agree to pay 100-200€ more for having the pickups i want in the guitar than having to buy them and install them afterwards. Same thing for the neck dimensions(and i am not talking 10 neck variations......just one slim profile and one fat). This way every guitar player would have exactly the specs he wants in two of the most important things that determine the playability and sound of a guitar.

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

I like emgs- but not in a nice guitar. I'm glad I bought my schecter before those came out. Hopefully they don't replace the diamond series, which IMO is excellent.

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

I like EMG's, I might even put them in a guitar again sometime just for crankin high gain. All I'm saying is it's not something I can use regularly. They aren't versatile enough.

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

It looks like they jacked up the prices a bit as well.

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

Someone made a great point one time that EMGs can make a $99 guitar sound like a $450 guitar. But they also make a $2200 guitar sound like a $450 guitar.

Different strokes for different folks. But from my experience I've never seen anyone who knows their a$$ from their elbow about tone and uses EMGs.

+1 That is exactly what I was thinking. They are still going to have their other models so if doesn't make to much of a difference to people love the guitar company.

+1, I couldnt agree more with any of your points of view. I had emg's also and I didnt notice ANY mojo in them what so ever.

Re: NEW Schecter guitars to come w/EMGs

Alright Skarekrough, this is going too far lol.

I wouldn't defend myself unless I knew what the hell I was talking about with tone. You are 100% wrong in saying that EMG's don't offer tone, and that those who use them know sh!t all about such a precious thing. EMG's can offer a wide array of tones, and if you say they are sterile, you clearly haven't tried the 18-volt mod. Another thing. EMG's + Tele? Wtf is that? I would never assume EMGs would go well in a Telecaster, seeing as those guitars generally aren't meant for music where EMG's would be required. Which is not to say that EMG's can only be used for heavily distorted metal. You can get a blues tone out of them, and some tasty cleans. I don't mind the neck pickup with the tone rolled off a little either.

It's very probable that the artists who use EMG's for metal CAN'T USE another pickup for that style because it doesn't offer the tight response and screaming sustain that an EMG does. Meaning that they know something about tone, but choose to use EMG's for their style of music because it suits! So please, before you tell everyone that they use EMG's because they know nothing about tone, consider this heavily: Why do you like one pickup or brand over another when it comes to anything?

PEACE!

You are correct...I didn't try the 18 volt mod. But why should I have to mod anything if they have tone already? I can buy Duncans, Bill Lawrences, Van Zants and Dimarzios and install them and they let the tone of the instrument through just fine. Did EMG forget to not make them suck before they sent them out?

Another thing. EMG's + Tele? Wtf is that? I would never assume EMGs would go well in a Telecaster, seeing as those guitars generally aren't meant for music where EMG's would be required. Which is not to say that EMG's can only be used for heavily distorted metal.

Actually, you just did.

If I merit a "WTF" for putting them in a Telecaster then let's be fair about this....

You can get a blues tone out of them, and some tasty cleans. I don't mind the neck pickup with the tone rolled off a little either.

You can get a Blues sound out of them....but they rob the guitar of the natural tone that it produces. EMGs seem to create more of an approximation of what the sound should be rather than the actual tone of the instrument.

It's very probable that the artists who use EMG's for metal CAN'T USE another pickup for that style because it doesn't offer the tight response and screaming sustain that an EMG does.

There are plenty of other pickups out there on the market right now that are direct compettitors to EMG to make your statement wholly untrue.

Meaning that they know something about tone, but choose to use EMG's for their style of music because it suits!

I'm going to say this and it's going to be wildly unpopular...

Metal guys don't know crap about tone. When you get past a certain point with cranking the Gain knob and an excessive amount of distortion you could mount an EMG on a 2x4 with nails for tuners and get the same sound.

Tone is the natural sound of the instrument and amplifier working together; you clearly hear both elements working in concert to acheive a tonal goal; one does not overpower the others.

So please, before you tell everyone that they use EMG's because they know nothing about tone, consider this heavily: Why do you like one pickup or brand over another when it comes to anything?

I don't shop by brand for pickups; I shop by the tone. I regularly use Duncans, Dimarzios, Lace, Van Zant and Gibson. What each pickup has in common is that it has a certain tone that it does better than the others.

As I said...EMGs make everything they're installed in sound the same. And that's fine if you have a cheap guitar and want it to sound more expensive, but not more than a few hundred worth of expensive.

You've got a lot of balls to say that around here with all the prominent, well-noted metalheads that occupy this forum.

I hope, for your sake, that you take that back.
