Yah, so I've been screwing with my main guitar again, just because
; blame it on hanging around the SD forum too much. Kinda had this idea running in my head not long after I bought it...
Stock pups were ceramic all the way, and sounded pretty good, but I wanted something Strattier from the singles, and a cleaner bridge pu, so I installed a home brewed 59/C and some SSL2s I scored recently used.
The biggest difference was more clarity, lower output, and slightly looser feel of the 59/C. Been playing ceramic pups for yonks, so it took me a bit to get used to it. Nevertheless, it's an improvement - the SSL2 kicks arse: in the neck it's almost piano-like; and the middle is much more useable than stock; quack is quackier. I'm also finding that they're quieter than the stock pups. Y'all know about the 59/C so I won't bore you
- it's very nice too.
Because of the switching on this guitar, it's possible to have neck + bridge, and all three on. The latter setting was never great with the stock pups but is very useable now - more clang and pluck, a bit like the tone on 'Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 1'.
All in all, a very nice HSS combo.
Sound clips - guitar into a Marshall AVT50 combo, indifferent inbuilt laptop mic.
Clean demo using the clean channel (which I rarely do but it records a bit better). Treble control is maxed out, if you can believe it and bass on 3 :alcoholic. Sequence: neck, neck+middle, middle, neck+bridge (split), bridge (split), bridge (full), all three (bridge split).
Dirt demo using the o/d channel (gain on 3) with a Fryer Deluxe treble booster, flat eq. Sequence: neck, middle, bridge (full).
