New SG restoration project

Hay dudes..

I have another SG project in the works: A cream 1990 SG Special. I am adding a Vibrola Tailpiece and a white pick guard, like the Customs in '65. For pickups, since I DO play these things, I need a little more cajones in terms of output (not much though - No "hot" pickups for moi) so I am straying from the true calling of the project (Antiquities probably) and have decided on a Pearly Gates in the bridge and a '59 in the neck.

What do you think?

Sounds like a terrific guitar. I'm not a big PG fan, since they can be a bit trebly, but seeing as how that guitar's made of mahogany, it might not be too bad. You might also consider a Seth. I love the way they sound when paired with mahogany.

Either way, good luck and post a sound sample when you're done.

Funny but it appears I just got an SG resto project too. It needs everything but since it's a white triple pickup Custom it'll all be worth it. Until I can swing real PAF's I imagine I'll put in A2P's, hoping to gets some aged gold covers for it since this guitar has seen a lot of years putting some new pups on there just won't look right.

I am not a fan of the PG's, I've tried them but no matter how big a fan of the Rev. I am I just can't get a sound I can use out of them.

Hey man! Thanks for the reply! Let me ask you (both of you actually): What if I ditched the PG idea and put an A2P in the bridge position instead, or a Custom? I AM having covers put on, which will affect the top end a bit of the PG. Or - what if I just went with a set of Antiquities, or Seth Lover pair? I want to pretty closely resemble the original, but I do need some punch, due to the type of music I play...

Btw: I am totally returning to 100 watt tube amps (a Vai Legacy); NO MORE Vetta modeling shlt for moi!

Any advice is so appreciated - I don't know crap about pick ups

You have to bring that SG to the next LI Jam. I love SG Customs...the more faded to yellow, the better!

I think you'ld be fine with the A2P, but as an afterthought, how about a full strength Antiquity from the Custom Shop in the bridge?

I tried the PGb/'59n combo and found it not so nice . The switching goes from bright bridge to dark neck and the tone is not easy to balance.
I prefer the A2'59b/PGn or SLb/PGn combo for light/bright guitars (SG, PRS CU22) or SLb/'59n for heavier ones (LPs, Singlecuts, McCarties).
BTW I would highly recommand the SLb PU , it's really huge !

No, I love mine as well. They definately have a lot of cut, but as a set, there's not much out there that can touch them, at least, in a LP. If you want more beef, maybe a PGn/C5 combo would work for you, but the PG set definately has a very cool vibe to it. :burnout:

I like the ANtiquities in this type of guitar. It gives it a real vintage feel. IMO Ant or Seths would be a great way to go. I do like the combo of a Jazz in the neck and a 59 in the bridge also. I have this set up in a custom thinline Tele (Mahogony body W flame maple cap). It sounds very 335ish. I don't think an SG would respond the same way.

Are the "full strength" Antiquities comparable to the old PAF's?

How about a Seth Lover set, or Antiquities set and forget all this "custom" matching?
