New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

I wonder if this "Hunter" signature pickup is anything like the Dokkenbucker?

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

This is going to be fun. I already have a vintage JB and an RTM, so I should do a test run of them against each other in the same guitar. (I'll add a vintage Distortion if I can find it; the Dokkenbucker is off the table for now.)

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

Really? I mean what is the Hamster bringing to the table with EMG? I will eat my hat if you can pick out the regular EMG from the Wylde, or Hetfield.

...and don't even get me started on another Lynch pickup.

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

I got nothing, but I am sure the specs will be released before NAMM.

cmon at least tell us whether the pickup will be exclusive to the guitar/custom shop or will be available as a regular production model

I think when I said 'I got nothing', it means I actually don't know.

Come now, surely one can never have too much Lynch? :)

The man wrote some amazing riffs and has what might be the greatest recorded high gain tone ever. However he would put his name on a loaf of stale bread if it paid him a dollar

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

Its always cool to check out new stuff, but I cant really see how either of these pickups will get any closer to these guy's tone, than the actual pickups they used. And thats if youre even into tone chasing anymore, which I am not, because neither had anything relevant for the last 20yrs, so that being said, its kind of amusing how theres all these signature pups coming out that have nothing to do with the music they made.
The EMG Tipton set is another one. Blah. Cant sell cd's, might as well sell your name...

For the record, George’s guitar tone on Dokken’s “Back for the Attack” is the pinnacle of rock guitar.

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

Id have to agree with you, thats my fav Dokken album because of his tone.
What pickup did he use on that one? Screamin Demon, or was it a Distortion?

One of the most discussed topics in all the internet.

George used a Distortion for most of BFTA, but there were some parts where the guitar used had a JB.

Aspen Pittman's purple '71 Superlead, with a Tube Screamer, and a Fostex 4 track recorder boosting it.

For the recording of the "Back For The Attack" album in the summer of 1987, George went for a more stripped down form of setup in the studio. The direction he took involved a very minimal amount of gear. Effects were of the old-school variety on this album. And the amp selection was kept at Marshall simplicity. Just like the album before this, he got stuck using amps he could not own.

"I borrowed heads from Aspen Pittman of Groove Tubes. He had a collection of all these old Marshalls that I just worshipped! He let me use an old purple and old red one. But he will not sell them," recalls George.

Effects like Vox wahs, Fuzz Faces and Mu-Tron Octave Dividers were present here. But the only consistently used pedal was the Ibanez TS-808, which remains with George to this day. This version of the Tube Screamer contains the Malaysian RC4558D chip-based op-amp technology from 1980. The TS-808 produces a silky, creamy distortion, especially when used with an already overdriven tube amp. It is not a gainy distortion pedal, but a very distinctive overdrive.

One newer piece of technology used in these recordings was the Sustainiac Model-B system. The Sustainiac, made by Maniac Music, Inc., was a two piece unit that included a dual floor pedal and a string driver transducer that was bolted to the back of the headstock of the guitar. The floor unit, the Sustainiamp, takes the signal, amplifies it and sends it to the transducer mounted on the back of the headstock. The transducer produces sound vibrations transferred to the strings, sustaining them for as long as you fret any note on the guitar. The mystery of the little black box on the back of some of George's guitars is revealed!

Thankfully this is still archived.

I always thought the tone of that record was kinda buzzy especially the isolated guitar tracks. Not terrible when mixed, but on their own nothing too special. The bucker was a distortion into a caswell modded Marshall (at least that’s the story) with a tubescreamer and a bunch of delay for leads. A lot of the magic comes from the production of those records

I agree, BftA was a good album, but the guitar tones were a little buzzy. I prefer Under Lock and Key, and Wicked Sensation even more, in that respect.

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

George did rent and use an SIR amp, but I think that party was long over be BFTA was recorded. Many threads on the topic over the years and I don't recall ever reading that the SIR amp was used.

Of course, this does not even address the revelation that the Caswell mods were reversed shortly after Tim left SIR.

Re: New Signature Lynch and Hammett pickups?!

Under lock and key has George’s best tone. Just listen the first 3 tracks on that record. Absolute perfection. BFTA is a close second though. Nice and gritty. The solo in heaven sent pretty much has it all.
