New song mix -- PURPLE PROSE (prog rock content)

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
I posted this song in its demo form a few weeks back.

This one was pretty challenging to mix, it has a lot of moving parts. There is really nothing too fancy going on here, mix-wise; only a handful of plugins were used and most of the work was in editing and EQ.

I wrote the song and played all of the guitars, keys, and bass.

Purple Prose
(or, The Life And Times Of A Particle Of Dust)

Star-shine glistening
Ever-shifting patterns of light
Harvest gathering
Prism scattered remnants focus over time

Dusty winds are blowing
Are flowing 'cross desert plains

Shifting shafts descend from the skies
Interstellar traveler to take its time

Wondering, pondering, to get the sense of it Infinite Energy
Particles now at rest, devoid of synergy Principle Uncertainty
Zero-point mass retain in relativity Die nullpunksinergie
Variant speed of light, quantum entanglement Theory of Everything
Celestial trav'ler calls us all To come along
This promise, Creation All within his song

[solo]

We all be but wand'rers Astral Light carries us home
Harmonic convergence Waves upon the shore

Light breaking over windowsill Casting a shadow on the ground Calling to you
Fly to the third star on the right Straight on into the morning light On solar winds
If you believe

Stare into the Void
Into the darkness there
It stares right back at you

Stare just over there
All of the Universe
In just one speck of dust

Turning, starting out again Thought you had a handle Now it reins you in
Cycle, life is like a wheel Once you reach the end It has only just begun

Take another turn

Well, first off ..it's wayyyyyyy proggier than I normally listen to, but having said that, I could get into it :) Nice vocal harmonies (some amazing parts actually) ..cool synth and nice jammy guitar/bass sections that pop up from time to time. Both the guitar and bass are very Rush sounding throughout, and incidently, I've been on a bit of a Rush binge lately (..what better way to check out a new Stereo amp :laugh2: ) Their tones/recordings are shockingly good...always..no matter which period/album.

Yes, Nathan did a killer job with the vox on this one. His pitch is crazy-good and he has a great feel for the style of song.

Thanks, it was definitely fun and very challenging to write/play.

For better for for worse, I don't think I will ever be able to shake the Rush or Yes influence in my playing not matter how hard I try. The penultimate section before the piano break was written to be a very flamenco-influenced part but when I mixed it I thought, Jeez, it actually sounds a lot like something from Permanent Waves! So much for that idea...

I definitely picked up the synth riff to Tom Sawyer...I think around the Montreal church bell chiming in; which is lame cause it's almost like note-to-note copying.

I don't know, the dude's songs seem dishonest to me.

I reckon the agenda is composing songs that reflect the seventies influence (Yes, ELP), for no apparent reasons (think of Steel Panther) by stringing together ideas (riffs, melodies, phrases) from famous 70s bands; as opposed to using the music as a canvas upon which the creative ideas are expressed vividly; regardless of how it'd turn out in the end.

I am not sure if there was any creative process leading to the birth of the songs. So ultimately, it sounds like the songs are copied from someone else, as opposed to being influenced by certain bands.

11-minute duration and sci-fi theme just because you can? What the f**k is 'celestial traveler'? What happened to originality?
