New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

Our Neighbor Totoro
Got an Eminence Reignmaker today and installed it in my Fender SS22. Have put about 2 hours on it with the amp at low volume with the speaker attenuation at max just to see if it sounds any good at it's worst, and yes I like it.
The bass response is medium, kinda tight, punchy, but slightly round.
It feels a little mid-scooped in a way but it also has this vocal, vowel-like, almost cocked wah thing a little, and there's a sort of chimey plucky slightly metallic sounding character to the clean channel, and the dirt channel seems to get hints of vox with the mid knob low and hints of Orange with the mids and bass knob all the way up.

It's more of shift away from traditional fender blues tones than I'm used to. I remember for instance putting a greenback at one time or texas heat at a different point in a DRRI and I think the reignmaker is going for the v30 kinda vibe. It sounds more like nashville country stinging fender type tones with a little kick on the cleans, and the drive channel just rocks harder now it's hard to describe I suppose.

Will try it more at higher volumes/less attenuation on wednesday I gotta work all day tomorrow.
Oh and as far as the level of attenuation I'd say max attenuation i can turn my amp up to 2.5 or almost 3 on the clean or 2 on the drive channel, and so far not wake someone sleeping in the next room. That might not sound like much but it's a considerable drop in volume and sounds lots better than when I've used rheostat attenuators.

Cool! I have always wondered about those attenuators, but all of my cabs are close-backed!

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

i have the maverick in my old dr and i like it a lot. it does sound best at full volume but even at max attenuation it sounds good. ive been interested in the reignmaker as well but i like the maverick enough i havent looked else where, yet. its the best solution to keeping the volume down with the least tone suck that ive found.

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

Congrats on the Reignmaker!

I'm also a happy Maverick owner and I've thought of putting the Maverick and a Reignmaker in a 2x12 for ultimate mix tweakability.

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

I look forward to a full volume test tomorrow I have the whole house to myself so I can see how she sounds, it says to expect an increase in brightness and my amp gets brighter anyways as I turn up, to a certain point, I have that feeling like it could be a little overwhelming at times until I break it in

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

I just installed my second maverick so now i have two amps running them. Really excellent in my book. Lets me crank the amps to the sweet spot and then pull the volume back to whatever is required by the gig, full tilt for out doors, back about 2/3 for most club gigs and I've even done live in the room studio recordings with acoustic instruments pulled back to the lowest setting. I've not tried the reignmaker but if it is anything like the maverick in terms of doing what it is built for, then I'm sure you'll like it more the more you use it.
The manual says it gets brighter as you wind it up, but i have found the opposite. It seems to get fatter in the lows at full volume. Maybe it is something to do with my tweed deluxe having no negative feedback loop so there might be some kind of interaction going on but im only guessing. Ive not had it long enough or done any gigs with the new one in my princeton reverb II. I guess time will tell.
The response is predictable enough not to worry about it one way or the other.

Last thing...i reckon it'd be super cool if they did one with a hemp cone...anyone from eminence reading this forum? ;)

i agree about the fatter sound at zero attenuation, could be perception or plenty of other things

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

I tried zero attenuation and plugged straight into the amp and it's not super loud even with no attenuation, I think the amp is also quieter overall after switching out the JJ 6v6s.

I used to not be able to sit next to the amp with it wound up to 7 or 8 but i've had it on 8 and it's loud and crunchy but I'm not dying standing 5 feet away. the bass remains pretty tight and solid, no farting so far and I like to run my bass on 6 or 7 mostly. I think the speaker has more low mids with zero attenuation but overall it's pretty similar tone through the speaker dial range.

It's definitely not too bright, I can play my strat bridge pickup and it has mid cut but it's not super glassy. Neck pickup sounds ballsier.

Could still use more low mids I feel like, some growl, but at least things are never muddy.

Anyways I'm gonna try to break it in some more, I bet that will help. I find most speakers find a little better singing voice after some abuse.

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

jjs are louder than any other 6v6 ive tried, they dont sound the same as a typical 6v6 but i like em

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

Same here. Really like them on my 5e3 but they are a bit 6L6-ish.

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

Just for kicks try this:
Crank your amp master volume up to full.
Move up your clean channel volume until it fattens up and starts crunching.
Set your gain on the dirty channel just high enough that you have a lead level boost over the clean channel.
Basically, aim to get any or all distortion from the power tubes alone rather than squeezing the life out of them an compensating with skinny, buzzy preamp distortion.
That should get your amp doing what it does best.

Pull the volume back so you dont upset the rest of the band at stage volumes with the speaker's dial.

These things i really dont thing are designed to make amps whisper quiet for practicing. They are designed to let you hit the really juicy settings on your amp, then allow you to get that to fit stage and band volumes in different rooms.

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

So far i really like it set the attenuation dial on halfway, clean channel volume on 5 treble 7 bass 6 and it's just starting to break up and then I hit the tube screamer with the level up and gain down or sometimes all knobs at noonish.
Have barely played with the gain channel yet I'm kinda still getting used to the clean differences.

Re: New Speaker Day: Make it Reign on these etc.

As an update I feel like the speaker is already somewhat broken in and this is the fastest I've ever noticed the change but already there's a drop in the highest treble.
I really recommend this speaker if you're looking to not kill the neighbors or sound guy and you like a British character to the mids and treble. The bass response is a little tighter than my stock speaker but lacks the oomph of bigger magnet speakers.
But even at minimum attenuation I could swear this thing is a quiet speaker, like the volume of a good ten inch but voiced like a twelve
