Hi guys,
Speakers make such a huge difference, it is nuts!
A friend was over this weekend and we did some gear testing.
I have a Bogner Shiva, PWE Event Horizon and modified Mesa Dual Rectifier which now has a lot of Marshall characteristics.
I have a Bogner 212 with V30s, a Stone Age 212 with G12K-100s and a Splawn that has had a host of Greenback type speakers from Celestion to Splawn to WGS, low and high wattage.
In our weekend testing, it was mre of the same, I just don't seem to like Greenbacks with my amps! There is a lack of balls, thickness and too much of that trademark Greenback fizz.
So, the hunt for speakers for my Splawn 412 needs to go back to what I like, higher wattage and higher db rated speakers. I am surprised I like speakers rated at 100db since they are less forgiving and that is typicaly not something I like in gear, especially when soloing. I think it has more to do with matching speakers with my amps. Greenbacks may be too much of a good thing. My amps are already warm and forgiving.
So, I am going to give Lynchbacks and Creambacks mixed another chance and really give them a few gigs before deciding, but I am leaning toward moving on to the following.
Also may give the WGS Green Beret/Reaper a shot or WGS Invader/Reaper 50!
I think any of these combinations in my Splawn 412 could be just what I need:
Celestion V30s (Hellatones) / G12H-30s (Hellatones)
Celestions V30s / G12K-100s
WGS Retro 30 / Reaper 50
WGS Retro 30 / ET65
May want to try these again:
WGS Green Beret/Reap
WGS Invader/Reaper 50
Classic Lead 80s or V30s/CL80s
Have any of you been through a similar quest? What were your end results and any suggestions?
Thanks!
