.....and I slapped the neck on to see if I was going to like the way I envisioned it in blue....and now I'm not sure. With the rosewood board and mop inlays, is the transparent cobalt blue going to look ok? Should I consider amber or green? I know I do not want a sunburst.

Help me out a little....I'm only going to get one shot at finishing this body...and I want it to be just right.

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

The blue would look great, but what kind of pickguard do you have?

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

Transparent British Racing green would look very nice with a rosewood fretboard.

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

Well, I've got a white perloid pickguard laying around, just like the one John has on his blue strat....but this guitar (with the exception of color) is going to be my "vintage" strat. It will either get my Custom Shop 54's or a set of Duncan Antiquities. Vintage Callaham bridge assembly...the works.

I was thinking about going parchment or just white on the pickguard....something subtle to not detract from the beauty of the wood.

I voted for the blue, because you didn't have the white option up there, (besides, Curly's and John's look killer).

But white, or off-white, parchment, creme, would all look killer also.

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

I vote for a light yellow or amber stain and then a clear coat, but keep it real thin.
BTW, a black or black pearl pickguard would look killer with amber.

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

Jeff,
I know what you're going through!

I'm going to do my own finish on my next tele. I'll dye the body with analine dye, then shoot clear nitro over. I've vacillated between blue, honeyburst, and finally, probably amber.

anyway, I'm sure you've seen my custom ash tele, but here's the link for some shots of clear blue on ash:

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

Curly - I love that blue tele of yours. I'm really partial to the blue, but I want mine to have a little more of that cobalt blue BAM....if I go with it. I've already got a blond strat, and I've got one that's a colonial maple color that I did the refin on myself. I want this one to be the cats meow.

I think it's really down to blue or amber...all of my guitars are fairly "traditional" colors....blond, vintage cherry sunburst, dark cherry burst, natural/maple high gloss. I want something kind of a little more "out there." Amber would probably be my choice if I didn't already have others so close.

Keep the votes comming....I really do appreciate and take to heart everyone's opinions here!

ps...I think I've decided to spend the extra cash for the nitro finish. That will give it every chance to breath and resonate. 6-8 weeks is a long time to wait...but it will be worth it!

I voted for blue. A deep royal transparent blue would look great. Or maybe a darker - midnight blue kind of thing. Maybe you could consider a dark dark sparkly blue (not transparent - matte finish).

If you want somethign out there - maybe baby blue, Salmon pink, tangerine orange, surf green - all good vintage colors.

Since you have a chance to finish a strat completely the way you like it, maybe you should get creative? You could go for some kind of your own burst - Blue to natural - or some creative color Les Paul burst. I personally love tobacco bursts -the way Eric Johnson has it. AAAH The possibilities.

I think some surfers or ANT2s would be rockin' in that thing.

Man your givin' me gas man :)

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

Jeff -

This is a bit different, but that grain got me thinking... mix cobalt blue with black, dilute some, then dye the body. Sand back so only the grain is dyed. Seal, couple of clear coats, then cobalt blue toner to taste.

It's like the "tigers eye" approach, only with blue instead of brown. It sure would pop that wild grain pattern. Then pimp it up with that pearloid pickguard and some wild knobs... ok, so it's not very vintage - so what?

Whatever you do, remember the best advice ever: "Fine finishers finish firewood first."

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

+1 for blue. An intenseish transparent cobalt would look SICK on that guitar. :D

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

I really think amber is the way to go, but blue would look very nice as well. I guess I'm just partial to an amber finish. :)

This is what your strat is missing.

AMBER!

Re: New Strat Arrives.....

Hey Proxy -

Do that in Cobalt Blue and Emerald Green if it's not too much trouble! That looks awsome!

Re: New Strat Arrives.....
