New Strat Day for modding options?

I bought this for only £30 yesterday, a Tanglewood Nevada., I thought it would be a good modding and experimenting platform.

It was really dirty, so I cleaned it up cleaned the neck pocket, it had the thick finish spilling into it, with a shim to try and balance it, so I cleaned all that out. it's a decent player, but the pickups are too hot they're the ceramic at the bottom type. It's the standard, really cheap, electronics too with 500k Pots, which I though odd as the pickups are really mellow bordering on muddy especially when dialed back.

I generally play bluesy type stuff, so I want to try something different witht this, all my other guitars are very vintage orientated. I compared it to my 50s classic series Fender strat. the Fender stayed completely clean, this Tanglewood was at full overdrive at the same settings. I was thinking maybe SRV or Rory Gallagher ballpark. or modern Clapton with the Midboost. Or maybe EMG SAs for something completely different. Do any of your guys have any suggestions as per pickups? SD non custom shop pickups are really my maximum budget as well. UK prices on ebay arnt that different to new but iam looking.

Thanks all

do you still want it to sound like a strat or are you looking for something fatter? i recently put a set of blackout active singles in a guitar and im very happy with them. lots of great passive options too

Still stratish, maybe a bit fatter. no full sized humbuckers or ones base on full sized (like little 59s). I think versatility is want i want.

If you really like the guitar, and your really like classic rock and blues and you're looking for a slightly pushed blues tone...

Seymour Duncan Texas Hot Antiquitys. I would get the set with the RW/RP middle and the Custom Power Bridge. It will be darker than your '50s Strat, and offer a nice contrast--a perfect set for when you just want "a little more", without going for overkill.

I have a bunch of G&L Legacys and I love the stock pickups which are similar to the SSL-2 sets, but I have a couple with the Antiquitys, and they compliment the stock guitars perfectly.

A little bit more expensive than some of the regular production stuff, but worth it tonally. And this is one set that will add value to your guitar.

Good luck!

I have a set of Texas Specials in my Strat, absolutely love them. They'll cover the sounds you mentioned. Mine are wired with a 250k tone on the bridge, no tone on the middle and a TBX tone on the neck, which allows the neck pickup to get brighter. They seem to be relatively inexpensive used, as well.
