Alrighty! Recently I had the good fortune to meet William and Renee Wiggins of Wiggins Brand Pickups in Tucson, Arizona! They make single coil pickups for Stratocasters, Telecasters, and cigar box guitars. What’s so special about them you ask? Beauty and soulful tone! Bill and Renee make their pickups with the bobbins made out of beautiful woods. Rosewood, maple, ebony, walnut, and even figured koa. The Stratocaster pickups can be wound in Vintage, Texas Hot or Overwound. I chose Overwound. You can ask Bill to vary it slightly as he is a reasonable fellow. I chose figured koa as my wood choice. You can also see he has a western-style carve design. And, for those of us who enjoy the macabre, Renee came up with a skull design which I decided to add on because it’s just awesome! AND THEY ONLY COST $150 FOR A STRAT SET! WHAT A BARGAIN! Take a look at the pickups below.
I’m still getting to know the tone as I haven’t played them as much as I want yet, but they are warm, rich sounding, FULL-toned, and strat-tastic. Seriously, this is the strat tone I’ve been looking for some time. I will be trying to add some more tone notes as we go one. You should all know that he does three things specifically, all of which I think are the bomb. Number one: no stagger so you can avoid stratitis. Number two: no RW/RP middle pickup. This is subjective, but I personally think you get the REAL strat sound this way. If you disagree… to each their own. Number three: He uses solid wire instead of stranded wire. I like this, but I am unaware of the reason. I’ll have to ask. Anyways, enjoy my pics! I changed my pickguard to Mint/Black/Mint and I think it looks super sexy!
