New to Phat Cats- your opinions, please!

I just picked up a pair of Cats for a good price (thanks to whoever gave the heads-up on the pair on TGP). Now I have to decide what guitar to put them in:scratchch It'll be either one of my LPs, or my only 333 (backplate, so it's not too big a deal to do swaps, moreso than a LP, though). I'm leaning towards a LP, because I have several to choose from; the 333 is not out of the question at all, though.

So tell me: what are their sonic strengths & weaknesses (besides single coil noise)? Are they better suited to darker, more compressed wood, or bright & lively? Point me in the right direction, guys!

I think they will sound great in either. They are smooth when used clean and bright and rude when used with distortion. Since they are alnico 2, they are not as dark and scooped as a real P-90 with alnico 5. I have one in my SG.

Re: New to Phat Cats- your opinions, please!

The bridge & neck both have twin A2 magnets (positioned so they repel). From comments here, these seem to work best in bright woods (I'm anti-Fender, so I have to take their word on it).

In warm woods & designs (LP, SG, 335) they are not at their best with the stock magnets. I was not at all impressed initially. The neck is very dark, and overpowering, and the bridge weak & thin. But once I figured out I could swap magnets in them, and they didn't have to be two of the same kind of magnet, then they blossomed. Then they become wonderful raw, open, single coils as the good Lord intended.

With a mag swap, a pair of Phat Cats is great in any Gibson design, especially an LP. I also use them in SG's and 335's. One of my favorite PU's now. Their metal covers give good shielding & they seem to have less noise than most P-90's.

Neck - depending on the wood's tone and how bright you what it, these pairs are ranked in order from warm to bright (but even "warm" here is brighter than the stock magnets): A5/A2, A5/A4, A5/A3, and A5/A5. All of these are good. For my LP, the A5/A3 works best. In my SG's & 335's, the A5/A4 is preferable (A5/A3 was a little chimey). Your tastes may vary. Swapping mags is very quick and easy and the results are worth a few minutes of your time. HB's are very mid-focused by nature, and that sometimes causes them to be muddy in the neck slot.

Bridge - I needed more muscle & more body, so I settled on an A8/A4 pair. More output, more mids, tighter low end, and better treble to cut thru. Plus it balances better with the neck. So far this is what I've used in my bridge PC's. I don't understand why they spec'd them out with A2's.

I use PC's in the neck with an HB bridge, and also in a pair. Both are nice.

You have it backwards; A5's are bright & A2's are dark. But like you said, A5's are scooped.

i've found the covers made a significant difference re the single-coil hum; they're not hum-cancelling but with anything other than threash-type gain they don't howl like other P90s.

haven't had the chance to try them in a hollowbody, but 2 A5 mags in a phat cat in a LP is right up there IMHO. enjoy!

Re: New to Phat Cats- your opinions, please!

I have a PCn in a basswood strat (fender aerodyne) and it was pretty dark with the stock a2 mags.

Listen to Blueman and swap the magnet(s). I LOVE my PCn with a C8 in the bridge. It has enough bite to rock like a humbucker and still sound good clean.

put them in your 333 and never look back!
I have them in my 335, and my 12 string.

Some of my favorite pups! You're gonna love them regardless of what guitar you put them in.

Unlike Blueman335 (whose opinion I respect) I did not like the Phat Cats when I swapped mags in them. Put A2/A5 in the neck and A4/A8 in the bridge -- didn't like them at all. Put the A2/A2's back in neck and bridge and I'm loving them all over again.

different magnets are all a matter of taste. if you want something smoother with fatter mids, leave the a2 mags in there. more bite, go for a5/a3. meaty mids, a5/a4, etc. imo phat cats go great with semis:)

Re: New to Phat Cats- your opinions, please!

i love the stock phat cat. fat and punchy with bite, the neck was too dark for me. i tried a3 magnets and that helped but i still wish they werent wound quite as hot. overall they are a great set in the right guitar and a les paul is a fine place to put em.

id keep the neck pup low with the poles pieces raised above the top a little and keep the bridge poles flush with the top and raise it as high as you need to get balance with the neck. the lower you start with the neck the easier youll find getting good balance. in general i find that setting the neck pup low on les paul neck pups helps to keep things from being muddy and balancing the tone of the bridge position

+1. Mine is in the neck of a Shecter Corsair, which mimics a Gibson ES335.
It's just a little noisy, but it has alot of character. It gets a great lightly overdriven "soloing sound" as well as nice chunky rythm chording.
I don't have the bridge model (I use a PG instead) but the neck is sweet unless you're playing detuned death metal or something.

The 333 it was, and all I can say is- WOW. Early in the honeymoon, but I haven't been this bowled over by a set of pickups since I can't remember; now I'm gonna need a set for one of the LPs...sigh
