new tone knob problem

Good evening,

Glad to be a part of this forum finally. I have a problem if someone can help. I just replaced a tone pot on a Kramer with one humbucker, one volume, one tone, and coil splitter.

I changed a linear tone pot (because it went from 0-10 at about 2) to a audio. The problem I'm having is that when the pot is totally closed, its on full, like its turned to 10. When I start to open the pot, it drops down to 0, then slowly opens the tone. Is this a ground issue? I just checked and nothing is loose. I hope its not a bad pot, I can deal but I'd rather have it fixed due to a gig tomorrow.

Again, when the tone pot is at zero, its wide open, when I start to open it, it goes to zero then comes back up.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: new tone knob problem

Ok. There was no ground problem. I found that if I have the pot at zero, I have to push it in just a tiny bit and then its off. Also if I move it side to side it turns off. Anyone think this will resolve itself if I keep working the pot or is it just a bad new part?

Sounds like a defective substrate or wiper in the pot. I would replace it, if it were me.

Re: new tone knob problem

There needs to be consistent physical contact between the track and the wiper contact. On pots with a flat underside to the casing, you might get by with squashing the metal inwards a little.

If the contact is lifting during rotation due to dirt on the track, it might be possible to shift it using electrolube.

The other possibility is solder dripped to the inside and now when the wiper makes contact on that end the signal just goes straight out. If that turns out to be the problem, replacement would be the only viable option.
