new tube combo/head

i need amp with a thick and articulate gain channel and a big, tight bottom end. i play mostly metal and hardcore stuff with my band, as well as classic/heavy rock and indie pop. i want to be able to coax nice cleans and slightly overdriven tones from the amp for my lighter stuff, but the main priority would be the high gain tone. i prob would need something with mutiple channels so i can go from clean>light overdrive>rock crunch>high gain metal with ease.

the amp HAS to produce good bedroom level tones when im playing at home/late hours and unable to crank it. im guessing maybe something around 50W~ or so. i might get a weber mass if needed too.

any suggestions?

Re: new tube combo/head

for 50watts, you should try out the traynor ycv 50blue. most 50 watts would be very very loud, almost too loud for bedroom volume in most cases, but the traynor has a master volume which lets you have very low volumes while still pushing the tubes to get the best sound.

the traynor might not have enough gain for youre metal stuff, but add a pedal and you can get all the good metal tones you need.

the amp itself has amazing cleans, which can be fender like at low channel volume, and can build up to voxlike at higher.

the overdrive is kind of like marshal od, but not completely, but still sounds amazing. and for its price, its way more than worth it.

how much are you willing to spend on this amp?

Re: new tube combo/head

maybe around 1000~1200 or so? i dont mind going used.

im currently using a mesa f30. great cleans and smooth lead tones especially with a single coil guitars, but abit too harsh and boomy for high gain rhythm, even when boosted. i dont think it would do modern stuff so well, i might need to tweak it more though.

+1 on the Traynor Blue . . . it's got serious craploads of gain. Get the extension cab with it for live playing and I think you'll be very happy.

Re: new tube combo/head

I'd stay with a head/cab if you play metal. Palm mutes sound a bit mushy with open back combos.

It seems like there's a lot of highgain amps coming out these days at an affordable price.
ENGL Fireball
Soldano Hotrod 50 +. + means it's 2 channel.
Hughes & Kettner Switchblade, Triamp, Duotone
Crate Blue Voodoo.
Peavey 5150, JSX
Marshall DSL 50 or 100
Mesa Rec or Stiletto
Laney makes a bunch
Ibanez Thermillion?
Carvin V3 or Legacy.

Re: new tube combo/head

+1 on the carvin v3 and legacy. from what ive heard they are great amps. also i hear traynor is coming out with 2 heads, one is the ycv 50 blue head (not 100% sure about this one, but i heard about it somewhere) the 2nd one is the Custom Special 100 http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?cat=60&id=357&type=32. this one i probably going to be AWSOME!! when it comes out. they say its around 1200 new for now, but since its still not released, the prices could change.. (but itll probably stay in that price range)
