So what happened was I ordered a set of matched JJ through Amazon.
They put them in the cheap padded envelope and shipped them overnight. Prime member, it only cost a couple bucks extra. They arrived as you see and hear them. I emailed amazon, let them know about the idiocy of shipping glass in a cheap padded envelope, and that when I had ordered tubes in the past, they were well protected in a box. They apologized and shipped out another set overnight for Saturday delivery ....in the same type of padded envelope. Morons. Luckily set 2 arrived intact.
Kudos for their CS , but their shipping department in KY needs some common sense (which I let them know in my packaging feedback).
Tubes sound great. The Mullard RI EL84 are a little too anemic, and lack headroom. I was getting frustrated with them

I've always thought highly of JJ EL-84's and JJ power tubes in general. It confirmed my opinion when Myles Rose (tube guru) publicly endorsed them as the best current production EL-84.
Too bad it was packed poorly by Amazonians.

I am not crazy about JJ pres, but I do like the EL84s in my TM18.They are beefier, higher headroom , and a tad darker than the Mullard RIs - all improvements in that amp. In the Class5, the JJs are a little harsh and muddy, the Mullard RI is a bit creamier and open in that amp.
I have bought tubes from Amazon several times, and they were well packed until now. Not sure if they came from a different Amazon distribution facility or what.
I got around to opening up that package tonight for curiosity's sake, and one tube survived intact. Luckily it is closely matched to the replacement set, so I can use it as a backup. The TM is pretty rough on power tubes. It killed a set of JJs and the original ValveCo (chinese) pair.
