New York Pro guitars?

There's a full hollow archtop New York Pro guitar at the local guitar/pawn shop for $250. It's cherry burst, gold hardware, with mahogany back and sides, I think? The top wood was pretty figured but I have no idea what it was.

Anyway, I was planning on dumping some junk gear there for some cash but I wonder if this thing might be worth grabbing. I did a quick internet search but all I can find is Strat copies. I didn't get to play it because I had to get going. Anybody play one of these? They crummy?

By the way there's also a dark brown sunburst Eastman 803 or something there that I kind of want to sell my car for.

IIRC the "new york pro" label was used by Sam Ash for a few years as their house brand... see also "Brownsville" guitars. Basically inexpensive MIC instruments with a rough fit and finish. Worth $250? Probably sold for that new...

That's what I was figuring on. I held the thing but I didn't play it. Now that I think about it, it did feel kind of shoddy in my hands. $250 does seem like too much now. The thing was real dirty too. I'm desperate for a "proper" jazz guitar but it seems like this thing would be a mistake.

The cool bargain jazzboxes to look for would be hohner and washburn... they're usually pretty well put together, especially if its an older Korean or MIJ one. Samick is another option... Ibanez artcore is never a bad choice either.

+1 on the Ibanez Artcores. The Artcores are chinese made hollow and semi hollow guitars. I have an AGS83 single cut 2 5/8" semi Hollow that I really like a lot - even if it is a cheapy guitar. I put a new set of D'Addario 11-49 strings on it last week and it plays really nice.

Re: New York Pro guitars?

I have a buddy that has some of those cheapo archtops might even be an NY Pro in the bunch as it sounds familiar. Some of them are all tight as they have a funky cool pawnshop vibe to them. He generally uses them for slide work but one of them is just too cool and sounds similiar to the one you described.

Kind of what you want out of it. Cool cheapos are fun to have around if you have some quality stuff to rely on.

I have one of the NYP strat copies for my kids to knock around. I think I paid $100 shipped for it.

After a set up, it plays great.
