newbie qu: humuckers & "slotted poles?"

Hi,
I'm new to the wonders of electric guitar mods. So I bought a p-rails to put into the bridge position of my partscaster. The p90 has what may be termed "slotted poles", is that the correct term? These look like they are user adjustable, is that true? If they are adjustable, to what end?
Thanks,
-Bob

those are adjustable-screw poles. you can raise them for a bit of treble and lower them to mellow the sound out a bit. if your getting an unbalanced sound, you could raise/lower one side of the pickup and raise the screws on the lowered side.

One set of poles is adjustable. A trick which a few of us use is to radius the poles to match the curvature of the neck and bridge. By radiusing the poles you can improve string to string definition and clarity. It is a useful adjunct to pickup height adjustment. On guitars with two sets of adjustable screws you can accentuate the response of the pickup by raising or lowering either set to get more bass from the neck coil, or more treble from the bridge coil.

indeed, my neck has a small radius (9"), so this appears to be something I should look in to. My neck and middle pups are single coil, pre "radiused" by Dimarzio (true blue). So only the p-rail in the bridge position is adjustable. Anyone seen or have a procedure for this?
Thanks,

You could also rotate the pickup 180 degrees in its mount to accentuate bass/treble.

if i were you, i would just adjust the screws until they matched up with the single coil poles, and then just go from there adjusting it until you like the sound/volume-per-string.

Re: newbie qu: humuckers & "slotted poles?"

I wouldn't mimic the single coil stagger because in a single coil each pole is a separate magnet, so the magnetic field will be different. Just mimic the curvature of the necks heel or bridge and keep things under 1mm of the flatwork.
