Newer Ibanez Destroyer's, thoughts....

I'm specifically talking about the DT420's, I was wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with them and what you thought about their overall build quality??? I'll probably replace everything under the hood because that's what I do but I'm just wondering if they play as nice as they look? Any other input would be greatly appreciated as well, thanks!!!!

Re: Newer Ibanez Destroyer's, thoughts....

I've got the 520 which is just a step above (with DiMarzio's and a better bridge IME) but very similar. And you could expect a weighty body, crazy resonance, and feels almost like an axe costing three times as much.

I've played a couple in Guitar Center and they were nice; especially the Flame Tops, felt a lot like the vintage ones and certainly don't stay in the stores long.

They have one at my local mom and pop.. I oogle over it everytime I go in there. Very nice axe

Re: Newer Ibanez Destroyer's, thoughts....

Technology and production these days is stellar for the price. As a bed to hotrod - go for it.

Re: Newer Ibanez Destroyer's, thoughts....

I haven't played any other destroyers besides the dt50's If they compare to that then i would say buy it asap. Mine has incredible tone, out of all 20 or so of my guitars it sounds the best. Two of my other guitar playing friends came to the same conclusion. Just monster guitars.

Re: Newer Ibanez Destroyer's, thoughts....

Really the ONLY thing I dislike about the guitar is that the first volume knob controls the neck pickup! As a Metal guy, I'm so used to having the knob closest to the bridge pickup be the one that controls the bridge pickup. So, I'm always reaching for that volume knob and it not doing anything (to the bridge pup). Some folks may prefer that setup, of course.

The pots and sometimes the pickups in a guitar at that price point tend to be junk anyways, and it's an easy mod to reverse their locations when rewiring.

Is it the tight-tune bridge I see in this? This is a fine bridge, and I bet the guitar must rock!

The one the OP is talking about has a regular tune-o-matic bridge:

It also has a Quik Change III tailpiece.

Re: Newer Ibanez Destroyer's, thoughts....

Dat's da one! I actually kinda like having the volume knob in front because I actually use my neck pickup a lot for volume swells? That said I'm probably still going gut it & make it my own because that's just what I do... I've never really liked Ibanez or DizMarizo pickup's all that much for that matter? So the Air Norten & Tone Zone would probably come out anyway. I'm not prejudice or anything, they could sound amazing, I've never played either? If I were going to keep it stock I'd probably spend the extra money for it but I'd rather put that money into my own section as far as pickups go and upgrade the electronics with my own harness ...

I do kinda like the way the pickup layout in the 520 looks & I also think that it would look amazing in the red bound body so I was kinda thinking a Phat Cat neck & I don't know, something cool in the bridge? I've had pretty good results with Pegasus in large Mahogany bodies before....

Re: Newer Ibanez Destroyer's, thoughts....

We've got a 520 at my shop, and I love it! It's actually a bit lighter than I would expect for a body that large, and it just sounds amazing!

I would change the wiring, though. I'm a Strat guy, so I want my master volume and 2 tones!
