NGD: 1990 Gibson Les Paul Classic

Pretty pleased with this score. Have played and owned numerous les Paul’s from as early as 2002 but never from the 90’s. Feels so much different to me and plays flawlessly. I read that the early 90’s were good for Gibson but this is the first I’ve played. Anyone have any more insight on 90’s Gibson’s in general?

Edit: I’m sorry it is sideways. I’m on my phone unfortunately

90s were a great decade for Gibson. There’s all sorts of theories why, we could split hairs for hours.

Just know it’s known as the “Good Wood” era, and yours in particular was a popular model when it came out.

How much did you pay for it if you don’t mind me asking?

They made it in a cinnamon burst color I adore.

Are you sure it’s les Paul classic? The inlays look very pretty.

Yessir it is the first run of the classic. This was before the snot green inlays and it still says "model" on the headstock. (Unless you already knew that and its sarcasm :lmao:)

I paid 1840 to be technical, but it was on a trade with a 2005 explorer and the rest cash.

Yessir, thank you! The gentleman was very generous and considerate. I was fortunate to say the least.

Re: NGD: 1990 Gibson Les Paul Classic

Absolutely a killer score!!!the early to mid 90s Gibsons were some of the best and still are...

Re: NGD: 1990 Gibson Les Paul Classic

These were essentially R9s without a few small details for quite a bit cheaper, right?

The first couple runs didn't use the snot green inlays. I believe they started in 1993, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Not really. It's basically a LP Standard with a 60s neck, ABR bridge, and 496R/500T. I've seen a few from the Custom Shop with '57 Classics, but most of them had the ceramics.

Yessir you’re right. These have Duncan Antiquities in them right now and they sound fantastic

Re: NGD: 1990 Gibson Les Paul Classic

If anyone actually finds a early Classic with model instead of classic on the headstock for $1350 please PM me.

Right? I’ve never seen one at that cost. The lowest I’ve seen was one with a headstock repair and a fair amount of wear for 1600

The reason for the later addition of classic to the headstock and snot green inlays was to prevent sharpers from switching a few things and turning them into R0-ish guitars where un-educated buyers didn't know all the details in a pre everyone having the internet & pre custom shop existence. Later they needed further seperation to justify to the average Joe to spend the money on a real R0. The rumor is a lot of the pre custom shop Classic's are Murphy painted.

That’s what I had read in some of my research today. Supposedly Murphy pretty much lived in the booth doing color and painting. I read a quote from someone who worked there during the early 90’s and said if it was pre ‘92 or ‘93 (can’t remember) it was painted by Murphy. Not sure if there is enough credible sources to back the claim but it is a beautiful job nonetheless.

Re: NGD: 1990 Gibson Les Paul Classic

Oh wow that’s crazy! All the 90’s classics I’ve seen on reverb ranged from 1800-2200. Even saw a ‘90 Builion gold one for almost 3k. Thought that was a little steep.

Those early bullion gold ones are unobtainium, so that price doesn't surprise me all that much.

Didn’t know that! It’s refreshing to find out things like this.

Edit: that did not register in my mind until after the fact. :smack:

How much did they value the '05 Explorer at?
