I absolutely LOVE this guitar! It might actually be my new number 1!
I bought this at a steal because the shop that had it, for whatever reason, made no efforts to get it into sellable condition. It has dings / scuffs / finish checking that are appropriate for a well-played, 16-year-old guitar. however, there was also a layer of grime on it and as well as what look like smeared adhesive from stickers that had been placed then removed. Fortunately, it was nothing that patience and Murphy's oil couldn't take care of.
Then, I moved the pickup selector from its (unusual) location to the standard LP upper bout, added a second tone control to have the traditional LP 2V / 2T setup. The neck p90 tone control is actually a TBX tone pot, wired with bass cut in one direction, and treble cut in the others. The neck volume pot has a Kinman treble bleed, and the bridge volume and tone are 50s wiring.
I love low-wind pups with strong magnets for more kick, and I'm a fan of fat fat midrange, so I at first swapped the A2 for the burstbucker 3 in the bridge to an A6. A6 is usually my favorite bridge magnet. It sounded great, but had a little too much treble attack, so I softened it up by putting in an A8 instead, and voila! - PERFECT!
Next, I gave it a complete setup - adjusted the bridge height and truss rod, and a fresh set of strings.
I've been playing this thing nonstop since I finished getting her ready, and man oh man - I am in LOVE! Like I said before, this may be my new #1! The BB3 A8 in the bridge just rocks, and the p90 in the neck accomplishes what I've never quite been able to get out of my H/H LPs - it cleans up so incredibly nicely for cleans, but does singing lead tones with the best of them when volume knob is dimed :argh:
