NGD: 2014 LPJ Pro

After almost 41 years on this earth, and 25 of them playing guitar, I now own a Gibby! Yep, my first one. Bought it used off of Craigslist for $400. I thought that was a decent price, considering I paid nearly that much for my Agile 3500.

Initial reactions:
It's light. MUCH lighter than the Agile. That'll help my back during gigs!

It's bright. I haven't tried adjusting the pickup height or pole pieces yet. It has 490R-Neck and 490T-Bridge for pickups. Not much low end there. I don't know if that's because of the stripped-down nature of the guitar, or the PUs themselves. I'm not sure I'll keep them...but the idea of having to replace the whole quick connect system to change the PUs doesn't thrill me. I doubt I'll use the coil split at all....maybe for neck stuff, but that's it.

The neck feels great. Loves the way it plays.

We have a show on Halloween, so I'll really put it through its paces then.

Nice! That brightness comes from it having a maple neck, even though it doesn't have a maple top. In that guitar if you change pickups I recommend ALNICO II Pros or if you need a higher output bridge pickup the Custom Custom. I have a Les Paul Custom with a maple neck and the A2 pro set sounded really good, especially the neck.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably swap out the PUs after the holidays. What's the easiest way to deal with the Gibson quick connect issue? Pull the whole system and start fresh?

Re: NGD: 2014 LPJ Pro

You can buy connectors and put them on the new pickups, bUT if it were me, I'd gut it and replace all of the electronics with high quality standard style pieces

Nice, '14 gets a pineapple! Good luck with it. I have to say that I love the neck on my LPJ.

The electronics are fine get the connectors, it's easy enough to do. I guess there is always the chance I'll gut and re-wire but I don't have any need to do it just to change pickups.

I put Gibson '61 Zebra's in my '13 LPJ and dialed them back a bit, they seem fine so far. I miss having a higher output bridge pup so that might change. Used it for it's first gig last night thru a house HR Deville and it was great. My guitar falls to the bright side of the line as well fwiw.

Re: NGD: 2014 LPJ Pro

So, I've been reading about Alnico II Pros....even went through the Pickup Selector. It told me Alnico II Pro for the bridge, and the Slash AP2 for the neck. I don't want to start another debate, but is the tonal difference between the two sets (Regular vs Slash) enough to warrant the $35 difference in price? Do you think it would make a difference in this guitar?

Not really, a slight bit more mids and output, either will work fine. I've never compared them in the same guitar though.

So, I bought the Alnico II Pros, and a pair of connectors from a guy who posted here on the forum. I had them installed Friday afternoon....we had a gig Friday night. I didn't even have time to test it out at home. Fired up the rig during sound check, and LOOOOOVED it. The AIIPs were perfect for this guitar. Thanks for the advice!
