NGD! 7 string...

Picked up this RG7321 for $250 on Ebay, plays nice but could use some new pickups. The neck is so thin, it plays like a dream. The strings are pretty dead, and the intonation needed some fixing. This is my first 7 string, feels different to play, and it's my first Ibanez RG, so it'll take time to get used to the thin neck and the lightweight body : private: I hope you enjoy my stunning photography with my phone cam :D

Dude, I used that geometry book when I was in high school! Do you like it? Are you doing good in the class?

Oh, and nice guitar. :)

Haha, I'm not exactly a math genius, but at least my teacher is good

I love this guitar, I've been playing it non stop for the past hour and a half. I'm feeling a JB-7 for it though :bling:

I put a JB-7 in the bridge of my 7621. I like it -- a lot -- but it sounds very different from the JB's in my Jackson Soloists (both neck-through maple in alder, one a floating Floyd and the other a TOM strings-through). It sounds great, but it's not what I expected.

I did a Jazz-7 in the neck, which is very good -- bright and articulate, not warm or muddy. It's a demanding pickup to play well; it shows off mistakes but also lets you know what you're doing right.

Re: NGD! 7 string...

Good 7 string to begin, congrats man, with but I wouldn't bother putting a new pickup in it though.

When the money allows, sell that and step up to a RG7421 or a RG7621 MIJ (Made In Japan) models. You will not regret it and you'll have a much better quality instrument that will serve as an excellent platform for modifications.
The shape of the neck is just much better too. The neck shape on the 7321 is not bad, but it just doesn't feel as good as the RG74xx/76xx models.

I own two Ibanez 7 strings currently.
RG7421 with AHB-1 7 string Blackouts.
RG1527 (Prestige model) with Dimarzio Blaze neck and bridge.

The Blackouts are very 'ehh, not bad but not all that good either'. Too much output and the overall tonal character is inferior to the EMG 707s.
The output level makes the bridge pickup an absolute nightmare for clean sounds.
The Blaze pickups on the other hand, are a match made in heaven for basswood.
Very balanced and even, perfect level of output (medium hot) and work very well for clean sounds.

Hmm, didn't know that the 300 series came with a five piece neck. Can't go wrong for 250 bones.

My only experience with 7 strings is a 7620 and 2027X, both many years ago. The 2027X is long discontinued but one hell of a guitar - 2hb, mahogany body, piezo Edge.

Now, go and learn Vai's 'The Mysterious Murder of Christian Tiera's Lover' :D.

I disagree with this. The RG7321 is a fine mod platform.
While it may be true that the MIK or MIJ models might have a better fit and finish than the Indonesian made RG7321, they are also discontinued, and difficult to find.

Get a new nut, proper setup, polish the frets, and new pickups...It will hang with a pro setup.

For what it's worth, I did not find any significant difference between my RG7321 neck profile, and the RG7620, that I played at guitar center. The 7620 had a glossy, sticky finish on it that I did not care for.

Re: NGD! 7 string...

So cool you got one with the new bridges and truss covers! If there's one thing I like about the Ibanez hardtails, it's the Gibraltar. I'm so glad they've phased out the Fender style one and now outfit the Gibraltars on pretty much every shredstick except for the ones with the Tight End and Edge FX. Even if I like the Edge FX ones a little bit more, I still remember when I first played a RGA121 and thought "this should be standard spec on EVERY hardtail shredder they make".

Re: NGD! 7 string...

Neck is Thin? If you could elaborate what is the Thickness of the neck at 1st and 12th frets? I normally use my 6 string with my custom profiled neck of 16.5mm 1st and 18mm 12th so I think 4X4 when play my Smokineleton.
I went ahead an got the AHB-1S PhaseII Set ( I know it is designed for Phase I) but for approx $100 with Shipping I made it work.
I have had some Issues which today realised was more my ability to reproduce extremely low Frequencys that was the culprit not the pickups being to Bassy or Muddy.
I still though have this Squeal if my TV is on which my SH-8 Invader does not seem to aquire and I thought the AHB-1s Active Blackouts were specifically designed to prevent this issue? Or am I misunderstanding Extremely Quiet Pickups Idea?
Shouldn't my Passive Invader be the one with squeals, schreeches not the Blackout Matched Set?
Other then that and once I listened to my sound via entirely different amp/speaker/cabs I was extrememly happy with the Tone the Blackouts produce especially on the Low B string, and I was Impressed with the cut through Molasses ability the Blackouts gave to the D,G,B strings.
Does anyone maybe think I should do some PU Sheilding or possibly double sheild the PU Cavities and control Cavities maybe Run some shielding tape on the PU's THemselves?
