NGD: Acoustic Content

This is my first "real" acoustic. A Martin HD-28.

I've been checking eBay for months waiting for one with a beautiful grain in excellent condition...and for a good price. Well it happened last week and I jumped on it. This one was built just a couple months ago according to the serial. It still smells like fresh cut wood.

The sound is really fantastic. I always associated loud acoustics with a boomy quality, but this one projects while still retaining treble clarity. The low strings have that piano-like pop to them, with a slightly mid-scooped rosewood tone. It's so resonant that I find I have to put more effort into controlling the unused strings due to all the sympathetic ringing (that's a good problem to have).

And I have a question for you acoustic guys: the guitar came without the end pin installed (it was in the case compartment). The pin isn't threaded, it's tapered, do I just push it in?

These pictures really don't do the grain justice. I'll have to take a few more in the sun at some point. Full album HERE.

Congratulations!! All guitar players need to have an acoustic around.

Re: NGD: Acoustic Content

I have an HD-28V and I still haven't put the endpin in. Yes, it just pushes into the hole. Congratulations, pretty guitar!

Re: NGD: Acoustic Content

Acoustic guitars like that help you big time when you get around to picking up an electric .

Congrats on a sweet looking thang !

That's a beautiful guitar, congratulations... you'll probably never need another acoustic!

Re: NGD: Acoustic Content

Thanks guys. I've been an electric guy for a lot of years and thought it was about time I got some sweet sounding acoustic tones in the mix. I love my Ovations, but they're really designed to be plugged in.

Who am I kidding, I just bought it for the chicks.

GAH!

Doesn't GET any more real than that!!!!

Hell - that could be your LAST acoustic. Never need anything else. Might be different stuff, but not better.

Re: NGD: Acoustic Content

What is the difference between a D28 and an HD28?

I love it!

My Guild has a tapered / push-in / friction endpin and yes, it just gets pressed in there or hammered.

Mine has fallen out before while standing up and playing. You been warned!

The "H" in the model stands for the Herringbone body binding. My Breedlove American C25 has herringbone binding. I like that style much better than those gawdy abalone inlays that some guitars have.

Congrats OP! I used to really want an HD28 for years. I find that the older I get, the less I like horsing the dreads around that I already have. But that guitar is a sweetie and I'll bet she's a powerhouse.

Welcome to the World of acoustic music. I own a few Martins & a few others. The D28 is one of my favorite larger guitars. I own a Santa Cruz Tony Rice, which is essentially a D28 with an oversized sound hole. Do yourself a favor and put a set of 13's on it for a while. it will open up faster & it will sound huge. They will challenge your fingers for a bit but you will get used to it. Great guitar and good luck with it!

Beautiful guitar! Is it still treating you as well now as when you bought it? Have you noticed it "opening up" at all?

I played an awesome HD-28e over the weekend. I'm seriously considering heading back soon to buy it. It was significantly better than everything else there except a 0-28VS which was almost too cool.

Just to clarify, the "H" in HD-28 does mean it has Herringbone trim, but more importantly it has scalloped 5/16" bracing (as opposed to the D-28's non-scalloped 5/16" bracing). This translates into a little more bass and a little more response. This is a throwback to the pre-war style bracing. At some point post-war, as 13's were becoming more popular, Martin beefed up the bracing to stand up to the increased tension. Eventually they released the "HD-28" which is a little closer to the pre-war style D-28.
