NGD, after a fashion.

Well, Agileguy's NGD puts mine to shame, but I'm happy to be back in the double-humbucker business. After stupidly selling my original, black, US-made Schecter back in the '80s, the re-creating it with a goldtop partscaster a few years back, then stupidly selling off the goldtop a couple years ago, I have now learned my lesson and present to you....

the Goldtop PT Mk II.

I spent the last two months trading bits and pieces across the Internet to bring this guitar together. The neck is a maple'06 MIM I had left over from my abandoned "surf Tele" project. The body came from a mostly-complete Schecter PT that I bought from a fellow Townsend fanatic on the TDPRI. (I still have the Schecter neck for sale if anybody wants it.) I put new Fender Ping Am Std tuners on it, and stainless steel bridge saddles from GFS. The pickups I found used, 59/Jazz. Electronics are all-new; two volume controls with push/pull series/parallel on the bridge and phase reverse on the neck.

Since I was traveling for work all summer, I did most of the assembly and setup work in my hotel room at the Hampton Inn. :lmao:

Since I was on Long Island, Wattage hooked me up with his good friend Steve DeMarino, who routed out the neck pocket to accept the square Tele neck heel. (Schecter uses a curved Strat-style neck heel, even on Tele-shaped PTs. You can see in the photo the new wood on the sides, in contrast to the remaining patch of paint in the center.)

To quote Ron Howard in The Music Man, "Isn't this the most scrumptuous solid-gold thing you ever saw? I never thought I'd see anything so scrumptuous as this solid-gold thing!"

Can everyone stop posting teles? I am getting a complex over it. I got the GAs

Re: NGD, after a fashion.

Nice job, Rich! I should get you to work on some of my gear.:notworthy

I like that amp, too. What brand is it, the guitar is blocking it?:lmao:

Re: NGD, after a fashion.

Just like with any tele, bro. There is beauty in the simplicity. That's what makes them so sexy. That's a sweet ax. Congrats.

Re: NGD, after a fashion.

Very, very nice. I don't recognize the bridge plate. What did it come from?

The bridge plate is original to the guitar, I just changed the saddles. The plate appears to be chrome-plated brass. The brass shows through where the saddle-height sets screws have worn ruts in the plate. A new plate might be in order sooner or later.

Nice job, Rich. That looks sweet. How does it play?

Pretty well. It took me a couple iterations to get it set up. The original bridge saddles were hard to adjust, I think several of the set screws were stripped. The new GFS stainless saddles were a big improvement, as were the Am Std tuners. In the end, I got the action set per Fender set up instructions, 1/16th at the 17th fret. The saddles are at a good height with no hand-stabbing set screws sticking out, and no neck shim needed.

And let's not forget the guitar that inspired it...

Nice. It took me a few nights to get mine dialed in. Just part of the settling in of new assembly. I've used GFS hardware before. The bent steel saddles on the Strat bridges are horrid. Too long of screws and way too plinky. I ended up swapping those out for Gotoh saddles. Made a big improvement and much more comfortable on the hand. I still have that bridge. Might be time to move it and some other hardware. The Wilky bridge on my latest build is great.
