NGD - also, help!

I finally was able to get a summer job, and with my money I found a great deal on this explorer. With a locking Dimarzio strap and a set of strings, I walked out of the store for less than $300.

The official title of it is the Epiphone Korina Explorer 1958 Reissue, and I'm not sure what year it actually is. It's got a few nicks and dings but it's still playable. The pickups sound great, I'm not changing them. Grover tuners.

The volume knobs are weird (one for each pickup). When turned all the way down, there is still a slight signal coming through. It's less when I roll the tone completely off, but it's still there. Any ideas as to what could cause this?

Anyways, here's a pic:

I see a half stack, a tuner, a wah/expression pedal, and an Explorer. All you need to blast the paint off the walls. Happy new guitar day!

Oh, and check the grounds and take a look at the solder joints. If it's none of those two, try new pots. Not that you should ever turn the volume down on that guitar, but, just to make sure.

Re: NGD - also, help!

I've got the same model & love it!
Mebbe someone swapped teh p/ups,the stockers didn't/don't do it for me(still have the stock 1 at nk for the time-being).
Same kinda "crosstalk" w/the pots,too,hoping it's fixable(plan on swapping/re-wiring,tho)...

Nice Grab!!!
:headbang:

edit:
1st 2 numbers of s/n should be the year,I believe.

I've finally had a chance to really play with it, and I've found its got some really bad neck dive. I've asked a few of my friends, and one said to just put up with it, another said move the strap button from the heel to behind the neck joint, and another said have the nut adjusted. Suggestions on how to fix it?

Friend 1. is the smartest.

I once had one of those, but with the natural finish. I replaced the stock pups with Deathbuckers. What a difference! Sold it to a friend of mine. Got a chance to hear it again this past weekend; massive.

I've got one identical to yours, including crazy neck dive. I bought a 3 inch wide leather strap. Problem solved.

BTW, mine still has the stock pick ups. I keep thinking about changing them because I love the guitar, but "should" hate the Epi mudbuckers, right? Unfortunately, it's just the right combination of flawed I guess.

Re: NGD - also, help!

Moving it wouldn't help much then?

I have a Gibson Explorer, and I've played lots of them with the strap button in each place. All of the guitars with the button behind the neck balanced, while all of them with the button in the same place as yours had neck dive.

Re: NGD - also, help!

I'd go with the wider strap first.

Re: NGD - also, help!

That shape needs to be reversed then it would be ultimate for balancing.

Friend 3. said the nut could help? He needs a smack that guy.

Re: NGD - also, help!

Reverse it with another horn and you have a star.
I never had a problem with neck dive in mine. That big old slab of mahogany seemed to balance the neck just fine.

Re: NGD - also, help!

I have the SAME EXACT guitar. And yes it has TERRIBLE neck dive. Until I moved the strap horn to where the Gibson Explorer has it, behind the neck. And I NEVER dealt with neck dive again. If you are comfortable then you can do that, just drill and go. Otherwise you can try one of the above methods.

Also, the tuners are good to stay because they are grovers and keep decent tune. I would highly suggest changing the nut, as the stock epiphone one is crap. Also the Epi pickups arent that bad. They have a very full tone, and a good amount of cut. You don't really need to change them unless you are bored or something.

Let me know of any questions. I bought this guitar in 2006 and have seen many good/bad days with it....
