NGD! An XSSIVE attack of the Clones

Re: NGD! An XSSIVE attack of the Clones

I can't believe it's been a decade either Mike. I was ogling 002 and 003 ten years ago and bought them 8 years ago!

I kind of like the fact that all three necks are different, 002 is still in Drop C, and the chunky neck feels good for those types of riffs. 003 is thin and wide and promotes thumb behind playing and 013 is a pretty standard thinner Strat shape. Definitely the most familiar of them all. Overall my favorite profile is the C on the Hot Rod AVRI 62 Strat, a little chunkier than modern, but slimmer than 62. I've debated replacing the neck on 003, but the flame on the current one is killer!

As to the mods, the nut is very nice, and locking tuners do make the change a breeze. I'd like some brass tuning keys to tie the look together, but I'm not sure if that will happen. I'd also like to hear a C5 in it, but I think for now the Single is going to remain. ;) ...and Marilyn may have to make a return too.

I really like that white strat style D'Avanzo you built... ;)

I'll PM about the logo...

One more thing, what do you think about polishing the brass on these types of guitars in general? I like how this one is going toward natural relic with raw brass, nitro and maple, but like on 002 everything is pristine except the volume knob. Is that the look or should I polish it?

I built 002 with the fatter neck just for that reason, I put thick strings on it and tuned it down to C or C#. 003 was me just seeing if I liked 1 3/4" nut widths over my usual 1 11/16". 013 was around when I found what I like best, that or in some cases a bit thinner. I can adapt to anything from .770 to .850 at the 1st and be comfortable, over that and they feel like bats to me haha. The main key for me as a player is a real shallow taper from 1st tho 12th. I've been lucky enough to play several vintage strats and they all have quite thin necks at the 1st to 3rd area (despite what forum experts would make you believe lol) it's just that they taper to baseball bats by the 12th fret in some cases and I don't like that drastic taper, ends up feeling like two different guitars. To me Charvel got it right back in the 80s and lessened the vintage strat taper making the neck feel like you were playing the same guitar as you went up and down the neck instead of huge thickness differences.

I don't mind locking tuners, use them all the time. I just don't like Sperzels since they're made of aluminum and I swear (or I could just be crazy lol) they make all guitars sound a bit dead. Swap them out for some hipshot locking staggered post tuners and you'll hear a difference due to the steel Vs aluminum construction. No one makes brass tuners that I know of, I tend to use black when I use brass hardware since it works better visually rather than gold since gold and brass are too different looking yet slightly alike that your eye is drawn to the mismatch more.

This is what I use on brass....

Excuse me PFDarkside, would you please provide a link for WCR pickups. I have been unsuccessful in finding them via Google.
Best regards, leevc5
