NGD! And Bonus Family Pic

1988 Charvel Model 1: In GREAT shape minus a little chunk off the headstock tip and that little bit on the top of the headstock. Frets are in great shape and barely any scratches on 'er (look at how clean the Jackson logo is on the pickup). Haven't had time to even re-string yet but gave it a quick neck and saddle adjustment and can already tell it's going to be a keeper. Neck feels slightly fuller than my other two model series. I've been wanting a maple fretboard model series for awhile.

Quite a steal at $250 Canadian (195 USD).

And for a bonus I took a Charvel family shot. Sorry for the quick and crappy photos!

I suppose that would make for a nice pic...I wasn't really thinking much other than toothpaste logo separate haha

Re: NGD! And Bonus Family Pic

That's a nice guitar and very simple and straight forward guitar. I like it...congrats on your purchase and for a good price.

Re: NGD! And Bonus Family Pic

Congrats on the maple board model series; I know you've been wanting one for a while.

My Model 2 started its life as an '87 Model 1 before being factory converted to a Model 2. When I got it a previous owner had chameleon painted it without so much as roughing up the Ferrari red poly, so the cool chameleon paint was literally peeling off in sheets. The neck also wasn't shimmed, so the action was probably 3-4mm at the upper end of the fret board. The first things I did were to shim the neck, open the route to fit an OFR, and swap the bridge pickup. I later routed it H-S-S and tried to strip and refin it, but that didn't go so well. My dad took it upon himself to finish stripping it, and removed the sealer too. I still have that body, and the neck was recently transplanted to my Model 1A.

I've been thinking about finishing the Model 2 since the previous Charvel thread. After further thought, I'm seriously considering filling in the middle pickup route and opening up the neck position for a humbucker. I was leaning toward EMGs, but I admit to being intrigued by the Parallel Axis Distortion probably with the matching neck model and Artie's version of the John Petrucci wiring using a 3-way blade. I'm definitely going with a Gotoh Floyd Rose as I simply can't believe how much less they cost compared to an OFR. I've also been thinking about having the body professionally painted since I'm not sure I could do a decent job with the condition it's in. Anyways, enough about my Charvels.

Congrats! :beerchug:

Re: NGD! And Bonus Family Pic

SO what about the Charvels does it for you?

Hard to pinpoint. Started as a strat guy (still am) then got into super strats, and when I tried my first model series specifically it just felt slick. Everything is just a little more compact and is comfortable. The quality to price ratio just cannot be denied as well. The only thing I don't like about the locking trem models is the kahler nut, I will definitely be getting them fitted with floyd locking nuts once the funds allow me to do so (it's one of the few things I don't feel comfortable doing myself). Now that I've got this one my next few purchases will most likely not be Charvels, unless a killer deal pops up. One day I'd like to add a neck-thru model series to the bunch or something like a model 88. I really need an LP style guitar in the bunch, but hard to deny a $250 deal vs a 1-2k purchase.

I'll also add some of these Jackson pickups are great. I'll probably swap one of the two J90C's for something in the future just for some added variety, but they do sound good, almost somewhere between a JB and Distortion. And the J100's (single coil) in my model 3 are awesome (they're in my 375 too but they sound better in the M3).

Dystrust - Thanks! And of course I support getting your original body up and running. And I can't recommend the Gotoh enough. Made the same decision for my kramer and it's most definitely a solid trem. MIJ ftw all around!

I've also got the original neck from my Model 4 and a bunch of other MIJ Charvel parts to work with. I'll try to grab a few pics of the body & neck later today. It's a bit of a shame that I don't really have a before pic for this, but might as well start somewhere.

Re: NGD! And Bonus Family Pic

If I recall correctly, they were that price in 88....$299 if it had the licensed Floyd. Everyone yanked the stock pickup and installed a JB.

In Spring of 1988, I was a teenager making my biggest purchase...a new Jubilee 2555 head for $880 out the door.
Right next to the Jubilee stack was a Charvel display of Model 1's in white, blue, red, and black.
