So finally my wife's Christmas gift arrived, carried by the Easter bunny... Better late than never!
It's a limited edition Ibanez Premium RG870RWZ in Charcoal Natural Flat finish. American basswood body, rosewood fingerboard, headstock and body top, 5-piece maple/walnut neck, binding on the body and neck, 24 fret, 25.5" scale, HSH DiMarzio/Ibz pickups, Edge-Pro II tremolo with ZPS system.
Came with a surpringly good soft case.
Plugged in my Line6 DT25 112 combo and 112 extension cab with a POD HD 500, it's a really different sound from the Duncan I'm used to. The pickups are real DiMarzio made exclusively for Ibanez, and according to Dimarzio's site the bridge being a cross between a Super Distortion and a Steve Morse model, the middle single coil a HS3 in single coil mode, and the neck similar to a Super2. All have ceramic mags, and it shows, sounding more agressive the the Duncan Distortion and Custom I have on other guitars.
Definitely has the so called "cocked wah" thing going on, and it's not my sound, so I'll start saving for a Full Shred set with a Classic Stack Plus for the middle position.
Now the playability really blew my mind. I had a limited edition japanese RG a few years back, that I foolishly traded for a Washburn jazz box (stupid, I know), but although the newnon is made in Indonesia, is quite a professional axe. The neck is a bit beefier than a Wizard but still more confortablr than the one on a japanese Jackson Dinky I own. Frets are well finished with rounded corners, and upper fret access is a breeze with the All Access Neck Joint. Actually the only negative on the guitar is a very small gap where the upper horn joins the neck, but still noticeable. The guitar has long sustain, so I hope it won't be much of a problem. Came with higher action and some hit-and-miss intonation on some strings, nothing a custom setup won't solve.
Awesome binding and top, the guitar is definitely a stunner, and brought back some memories (my first pro-level guitars were RG's, over 20 years back.
For those who don't want to overstretch a tight budget for a japanese RG, these Premiums are very good guitars for the price (€880, bought in a Portuguese store).
Sorry about the crappy phone pics, for better one go over to Google!
