NGD: Fender Squier Telecaster Custom II

So I'm a bit excited about this one, seeing that this piece of gear is everything I've typically veered away from. Being an LP and humbucker guy, it's very unusual, but it was hard to pass up. I came across this Tele on CL for $175. It's a Squier Custom II, comes loaded with LP-style controls, and Duncan Designed P90s, and came with a hard case as well. My only personal experience with P90s are with my P-Rails in my LTD PB500 in (none other than) P90 mode. I just messed around with it for about a half hour, and must say I was quite surprised with the tones it has. Very snappy and bright, it'll take me some getting used to the 25.5-inch scale, but I can already see that I'll be picking this up more often than not. Neck feels just a bit thick for my taste, but again, will take some getting used to. It's in pretty good condition, played every once in a while by the previous owner. After I play it for a few months, I will probably upgrade some of the hardware, pickups included if I get bored of them. All in all, I think I came across a very decent deal.

Nice! I like the duncan designed P90s. The Tele Custom is a cool look. Should be way more popular I think.

I've owned like 20 guitars (used to love trading and upgrading) but my second guitar was the Squier Tele Custom with 2 humbuckers.

I still have my Squier VM Tele Custom II. It remains excellent for rumbly Blues Rock filth.

IMO, the tuners, bridge saddles, selector switch and pots are crêpe. I keep thinking about changing the pickups - either to SD Stacks or TV Jones 'Trons of some sort - but never quite get around to it.

EDIT - Do be aware that the Squier pickup mounting method is somewhat convoluted. The DuncDes P90s are conventional Soapbars. These have a flat metal bar screwed on from below. At each end of each bar are the threaded holes for conventional height adjustment screws via the pickguard.

Good to know, Funkfingers. For now, I'll keep it as is, probably will get a setup by a local tech who did an amazing job on my Epi LP Custom which has always been my go to guitar. The main reason for buying this was to try something new for me and inspire new ways and styles of playing and tone chasing - I'm always looking to further my skills.

I have this exact guitar... and I freaking love it!

Re: NGD: Fender Squier Telecaster Custom II

I have one and I love it.
This is an excellent guitar to plug straight into an amp, turn the gain down and the volume up, and revel in that crunchy goodness.

I've wanted one of these ever since they came out with them. I don't need any more Squire Teles (already got 2) and I've got P90s out the wazoo, but I still want it anyway. And I want it in black, just like yours. I'd probably put BKs in it somewhere down the line. BTW, one of my teles has Fender Custom Shops in it, and the other has Texas Specials (for Tele).

If you're ever in the mood to sell...

That's a sweet Tele, and it sounds like you got a good deal too. Especially with that case. Enjoy.

So here's a bit of an update. I've been playing this Tele more often than not. It just sounds SO good through my Marshall combo. I've had to dial back the presence to around 4, bass at 6, mids dimed, and treble at 6-7. It was so snappy that it was ear piercing. My settings allow it to still snap but it has a bit more thump. I never knew I would love that snappy bite and bark of P90 pickups. The guitar also stays in tune pretty well too, which I found a little surprising given it's a Squier model. It's very dynamic, too. I can roll off volume to clean up my crunch a bit. To say the least, I'm extremely happy I made this purchase. Anybody want a vid to hear it?

Re: NGD: Fender Squier Telecaster Custom II

A lot of the "upper end" Squiers, much like Epiphone these days, are excellent guitars. I have a Squier J5 tele, and it's my #2. You can get a whole of guitar, for a little bit of cash now. I've said it, and I've heard others on here also, groceries and gas are a necessity, guitars are not... Smaller brands realize it, and have adjusted accordingly.

Glad you're diggin it! Fire up the cam, Drew!

I got the same guitar with humbuckers a month ago off craigslist for $100. I have been messing with the wiring since then.

Cool guitar! Anyone else just score a Squire at a killer deal? LOL!

Did I mention that it had a set of 59's, CTS pots and Sprague caps? The kid who sold it to me said the wiring didn't work correctly. It ends up his friend wired all the controls as volumes.
