NGD! (Finished Guitar Day)

I've finally finished my Tele/Nashville/Partscaster.

I did post elsewhere previously with wiring and pickup questions, but this is the finished article so time to show it off.

It's a swamp ash Mighty Mite body and a Mighty Mite compound radius Strat neck.

I've laid an ebony veneer on the face of the headstock, and inlaid that with a Scorpius constellation in abalone dots. I don't believe in astrology, but it kind of works on the headstock, and that's my sign.

I replaced the plastic fret dots with abalone ones. I rolled the fretboard edges, installed an Earvana nut, and leveled and dressed the frets.

For pickups, I've got a Trembucker spaced JB in the bridge, a Dimarzio Area58 in the middle, and a Joe Barden Danny Gatton neck pickup.

I put a greasebucket circuit on the tone knob, and a Kinman treble bleed on the volume. Both are 250k audio pots.

The tone control is a push/push switch, which does series and parallel wiring on the humbucker.

It's got a Schaller Megaswitch, which gives me bridge, bridge/middle, bridge/neck, middle/neck and neck on its own. With the series/parallel switching, I've got eight useful sounds!

I put a set of Tronical tuners on it (a divisive subject I know, but truly amazing in practice for alternative tunings).

I fully shielded all cavities with copper foil, and it is as quiet as a mouse.

I made the scratchplate from a blank. I've modified the standard tele shape, with something I came up with. It flows round the top of the bridge plate and the control plate. Lots of templating/routing/drilling, and tons of filing!

Here are a few more pictures taken during the build.

I'm chuffed with the way it's turned out. I learned a lot making this, and I've got some other ideas for another build.

Here's one more in its new home, with some other family members.

Wow! Beautiful work. Great job. That's something you can be proud of. Nice pup selection too.

Looks nice! And looks like quite a bit of work there.

I missed the thread around the electronics. Is it 3-way or 5-way switching? If 5-way, do the pickups mix well? (3 different manufacturers, just wondering if all the combinations work well, or if you favor certain combos of the pickups)

It's 5 way switching. I did originally just have a neck and a bridge with a 3 way switch and the series/parallel for the humbucker.

I missed my stratty in between sounds, so I went looking for a noiseless middle pickup.

I settled on the Area 58 based largely on reviews and demos.

The 2 and 4 positions sound great on this guitar, and the middle gives me the tele middle position option (albeit with a JB humbucker in either series or parallel)

It does sound great. The pickups work well together, and I've got all the tones I love.

I like the veneer on the headstock idea. Can't get into the black pearloid pickguard though. Tortoise might have matched better.

Re: NGD! (Finished Guitar Day)

I like the veneer too, did you cut it out or buy it pre- shaped? How did you glue it?

Re: NGD! (Finished Guitar Day)

I got the veneer from my work (I make furniture). I made the block you can see under the headstock here

from an offcut of ash, and shaped the curve into it.

I pressed it onto the face of the headstock with a few layers of the thin shiny grey packing foam. Glue doesn't stick to that and and it spreads the pressure well.

I used what we used to call Cascamite glue. It's a powder resin that you mix with water. I added some black stain to the glue as well.
That glue doesn't creep once it has gone off, unlike PVA. It does really need 6 hours or overnight under pressure though.

It went down perfectly first time, and I sealed and filled the veneer grain with superglue.

I sprayed it up with PU clearcoat.

I originally wanted a tortoise pick guard. Tried a couple and sent them back due to being poor digital images. l settled on the pearloid because I couldn't find a really good quality tortoise locally.

I do really like the black pearl myself though.
