NGD: Get OFFSET! Jazzmaster content

Found an ad on Facebook that I'd been looking at. My telecaster sold and freed up a little cash so I made an offer contingent upon playing and went out to try out this Jazzmaster about an hour away. It was in a pawn shop. Turned out to be a first year (2008) Classic Player Jazzmaster with the film still on the pickguard. No original gigbag but did come with a wide Levy's strap for $550. Very good deal, but not amazing. I'm a happy camper though. First thing will be new strings and a setup (feels like the original strings from 11 years ago on here) and then look at a mastery bridge for it.

Cool find! Jazzmasters rule. I own a Squier VM Jazzmaster, modded with a SJM-1 set, and it's surf rock galore on it. Really awesome clean sounds.

Rock on! Congrats on your NGD!

Congrats!

Not sure you need a mastery bridge- they improved the stock bridge on that model- it basically has a Gibson Nashville bridge now- and they fixed the neck angle.

I've wanted one since I played an original '65- they sound awesome- and your plays even better

Super Nice how are you liking the pickups, the classic player ones are a little different than many JM ones.

Yeah I was reading about that. Apparently they are closer to legit P90s than normal Jazzmaster. I'm going to get my strings on it tonight and see if I can get it setup just a touch better and see what I think of them. They've got a lot of soul in there.

Sweet. I like low output pickups myself but a lot of people say the middle position on classic player pickups is awesome so hope you enjoy it

I love the p90 in my lp junior. It doesn’t push my roland street cube enough for smooth legato, though. I haven’t tried putting a pedal infront of that amp yet, though

Beauty. What a find. I love the jazzmaster tone.

I have a Thurston Moore signature jazzy. It came stock with an aluminum pickguard, single 1M volume knob, no other electronics apart from the EPIC SD Antiquity pickups.

I modded it with a Mastery bridge. The stock bridge is crap. No sustain and fries strings if you use the tremolo.

The Mastery is available in a an American or Japanese version. Remove and check where yours is from.

My ******* former guitar tech routed my guitar to fit a US Mastery bridge when it was OEM a Japanese sized bridge. The holes are different sizes.

Thurston has been using Mastery for a long time. Why didn't Fender just have it stock?

Re: NGD: Get OFFSET! Jazzmaster content

Not my bag - but the 60's funky rock/surf/jazziness of it is undeniable!

And of course, P-90 goodness!

Re: NGD: Get OFFSET! Jazzmaster content

looks nice man. hows the neck on it?

A bit chunkier than I'm used to a Fender feeling but I wouldn't call it thick. Been so busy with work I haven't had a chance to get new strings on it and set it up. I'll definitely be putting it through it's paces this weekend.

Re: NGD: Get OFFSET! Jazzmaster content

i like chunky so that might be right up my ally

I'm guessing because Mastery bridges are significantly more expensive than the one they're using, and Fender is counting on most of the people who buy them not caring.

Did you notice Fender went with bent plate saddles for the American Standard line. Previous gens of that line used to have much better.

It's a company run by accountants.

Re: NGD: Get OFFSET! Jazzmaster content

Anyways, the Mastery made a typical sustainless jazzmaster much better in terms of sustain. That was the main improvement for me.

Re: NGD: Get OFFSET! Jazzmaster content

I liked the stock JM bridge on the squier *because* it has less sustain. When you go for gain, sustain is fine, but clean you get a more acoustic jangly strum that is percussive and leads can have some of the metallic sounding harmonics that I don't get from my other guitars.
Also re: strat saddles... Bent steel vs block... I could not care less, I can't tell the difference and they feel about the same under my hand. I am not saying others don't have a valid reason for preference of one or the other but give me either as long as the whole guitar sounds like a strat.
