NGD – Gibson SG = WOW!

Hi guys,

I've been playing guitar for quite some time and usually look at the classifieds for used guitars and amps that may be good offers. I only make NGD threads for the stuff that I think is worth keeping.

This one is a 2010 Gibson SG Special Faded in worn red with 490 R/T pickups and a 50’s rounded neck (thankfully). I got it for 400 bucks which seemed like a good price to me, I looked it up on reverb and eBay before buying and they sell for 400-600, so it was within range. The specs are pretty standard, 22 frets on a Rosewood board, mahogany neck and body, and AlNiCo II PUPs.

I bought it on Sunday night, and when I got home it was too late to plug in the Gigmaster and raise hell, so I played it unplugged. I was amazed at how light this is! I own an Epi LP which is heaviest and a Gibson LP which is lighter, but this is feather light! It just hangs perfectly from my shoulders. I was looking for one without a slim taper neck, and this one has the same shape as my LP which I love, so it plays awesome. The satin finish and double-cut SG body make shifting from fret 1 to fret 22 effortless, it also sounded great too and quite loud for such a light non-amplified electric. It was hard for me to put her down and go to bed.

On Monday I made sure get home early enough to let her roar, and she did! It sounds incredible through my amp (ENGL Gigmaster 315 + 310 cabinet). Nice and deep lows on clean through the neck pickups and clear highs through the bridge. Then I switched to my usual channel, where I keep the gain pretty low, but enough for crunch and to be able to drive it when I hit the strings hard. It sounds completely different to the LP (BB Pros), which is a good thing for me. It doesn’t drive the amp as much as the BurstBucker Pros, but it’s exactly what I wanted. The AlNiCo II magnet is really warm, the neck sounds great for Guns N’ Roses and does “woman tone” unbelievably well. The bridge is trebbly enough for Led Zeppelin and, of course, AC/DC.

I’m really blown away by this guitar, I was looking for a light and affordable Gibson to take to the studio and leave the LP at home, but (don’t tell anyone) I think I like this one better than the LP. Enough talking, here are some pics. By the quality of the pics, you will see that I wanted to take them as fast as possible and get back to playing, lol.

Cheers,
Walter

P.S. If you live in Zürich and want to get together and jam, send me a PM.
P.P.S. I’m thinking about buying trapeze and crown “inlay” stickers, what do you say?

Did you know that this is your guitar's spirit song? Nice score!

Nice score!

Just play the hell out of it as is

The 490's have really grown on me fwiw, kind of dig them.

Re: NGD – Gibson SG = WOW!

Nice! I voted no inlay stickers, i mean yes inlays of that kind would look good on that guitar, but *personally* having plastic dot inlays is fine, certainly nothing to hide, and the idea of stickers on a guitar neck just doesn't do anything for me. You gotta have a reason to still lust after different SGs, some of which may have sweet inlays, right?

I like block inlays inlays and would go that route if I was a sticker guy. But seriously if it makes you pick up the guitar more, shoot, get some inlay stickers

I always found the 490 r/t pretty dang decent in those kind of SGs, nice and warm, barking but not like super aggressive. I found the 490r/t setup still a little muffled in stock form though I liked the character so I ended up playing with magnet swapping but it sounds like you got a winner right off the bat which is always always good!

Re: NGD – Gibson SG = WOW!

Well, you know where I satnd from over at tdpri...I like it the way it is!

Now I'm curious about the 490 in the bridge. Liked in the neck, but I wasn't as thrilled with the 498 bridge (Just not my cuppa).

The poll isn't valid, lightning bolts isn't an option.

Nice guitar and congrats! I own a '91 black Gibson SG Special myself and I really love the tone I get from the 490R/490T pick ups...they seem both balanced and deliver the tone I was always looking for.;)

Nice score! [emoji1303]

I’d play it as is. I voted “no “to the stickers because even though I am a sucker for fancy inlays I would rather have real dots then fancy stickers.

Enjoy your new axe!

I vote no as well. You be you. That guitar rocks.

Re: NGD – Gibson SG = WOW!

There’s no need to dress up that unpretentious little SG with fake inlays. Let it be what it is, because it’s awesome.

Re: NGD – Gibson SG = WOW!

Another no vote. She is what she is, and that great guitar does not need stickers.

I am always surprised how many players don't realize how greats SGs are. SO much great rock has been played on them!
Enjoy.

Yes! I had no idea, and I've been craving for a LP all along; I've owned 4 Epis LP and one gibson, and the latter is best. Then I bought this SG to have a good guitar that is light and great sounding to take to practice. Now I'm literally blown away but her! I used to think that LP looked better, but after playing this light SG and feeling it, I couldn't care less about the looks! This plays, sounds and looks great!

Lol, I didn't even buy the stickers, those were just piecesof paper that I laid on top to have an idea, if you look closely they are alighned like sh¡t... I couldn't bother, I blew them off and kept on playing.

Very nice! Did you add the covers for the sound or only for asthetics? How do those Duncans sound compared to the 490 R/T?

Re: NGD – Gibson SG = WOW!

Congratulations on your new baby! I have enjoyed one of those SGs for years in the Faded Brown color and love it. I did roll the edges of the fretboard and have exchanged several sets of pickups in it, including P90s. Currently mine is featuring a 490R/498T combo and it does all I can ask of it.

Re: NGD – Gibson SG = WOW!

I just rounded the edges of the fretboard a little with a small file, and it felt more comfortable to play. I did not have to file the fret ends. The neck now just feels like I have played it for twenty years.
