NGD...Godin Belmont...

Here's the latest acquisition that I got from my local pawn shop. I've been eyeing this guitar for a few weeks now and I finally made a purchase on Monday. It's a used 2014 Godin Belmont guitar in Laurentian white with a 3-ply black pick guard that looks pretty killer. It has genuine Seymour Duncan pick ups in it along with a cool looking Bigsby vibrato unit. I've always heard good reviews on Godin guitars which are entirely made in Canada like mine. I got it for a great price of $525 CDN without NO taxes. These guitars brand new go for about just over $1,200 so I got a great deal. It includes a Godin soft-shell case that is very well padded with extra compartments for storage. It needs a bit of a set-up like a new set of strings, cleaning of the fret board and some lemon oil to bring out the lustre of the rosewood FB, intonation and truss rod adjustment which I can do myself. I'm pretty stoked by this guitar especially with the Seymour Duncan pick ups and the Bigsby vibrato.

Here's some specs on the guitar. The scale length of the fret board is 24.75". The body is made of solid mahogany wood for great resonance. The neck is also made of mahogany with a really nice rosewood fret board. The pick ups include 2 Seymour Duncan Lipstick Tube single-coils and a Duncan '59 humbucker in the bridge position. The tonal diversity on this guitar is fabulous. The shaping of the neck uses Godin's Ergocut shaping technique which feels ultra comfortable in my left hand. The fret board radius is 12" for a good feel and bending of the strings without fretting out. The guitar is also equipped with a true Bigsby vibrato unit and a bridge with roller saddles which is a bonus in tuning stability & less chance of string breakage.

Here's a picture below of the same exact guitar I have. It has some bevelling on the inner horns and half the body is arched like on a Mosrite guitar. It looks very cool and the contours are very sexy looking. It's like a cross between an SG guitar and a Stratocaster. I love the control knobs and the 5-way selector switch feels pretty solid. It even has Schaller strap lock buttons on the body which is another bonus. This guitar is perfect and it doesn't need any modding whatsoever. Even the nut at the head-stock looks high quality like it's made from synthetic bone or something. It has bevelled edges at each end of the nut which is a nice touch. They sure do pay attention to detail on this axe.

Here's a picture that shows better the arched top and bevelling on the inner horns.

Here's an image of the back side where it has a belly cut and some bevelling on the back side of the horns. The neck heel where the neck joins onto the body is ergonomically curved for better upper fret access. This guitar is simply an amazing piece of work. I've played this guitar through my Fender Twin-Reverb amplifier and the sounds that come out of this guitar and very clear and well-defined...I couldn't be any happier.

Here's a good video that demonstrates this guitar and the sounds you can get from it.

Godins are great guitars. Congrats and enjoy.

They usually use Graphtech for the nut but I think they buy them as blank stock. I saw a video that showed them slotting and fitting in house.

Re: NGD...Godin Belmont...

What a lovely guitar. I'm sure it sounds great with the SD pickups!

What is the neck profile like? Godin makes awesome guitars, but their necks are usually too small for me.

Hey thanks...I'm not sure of the neck profile but it does feel a bit small and thin but I love it very much...it's unique for sure.;)

I hadn't seen that model, so I learned something today! I love my new Godin, too. They really should be more popular than they are...

Re: NGD...Godin Belmont...

I have the same one. But mine had a few dings and scratches when I got it. Really good guitar. I always tweak my guitars and this one is no exception. But the main thing was to wire the bridge pickup (a ‘59) in parallel. To me in series it’s too muddy and lacks some air. I love the lipsticks and when I would switch to the bridge it just got too honky. I’ve actually bought a toggle switch so I can wire it up for series/split/parallel. Plan to do that in the next week or so.

Some other mods I’ve done, graphtech nut, roller bridge, vibramate spoiler (this awesome too. Makes string changes much easier), locking tuners, and sanded down the neck and applied an oil finish. Love it.

And someone asked about the neck profile. I also have a LG and LGX-SA. Those two have similar necks. Kind of a wide thin neck. Not terribly thin like a shred neck. The Belmont neck is a little narrower but also a little thicker. I wouldn’t mind it being a bit beefier, but it is still very comfortable.

I remember your Godin guitar and it sure looked sweet. It sort of inspired me. One member on this forum who is into Godin guitars kept nagging me on getting one for weeks and now I finally have one. The ergonomics on this guitar are really comfortable and the SD pick ups are just perfect for this guitar. And your right...they should be more popular than they are. You really get what you pay for.;)

You bought a Godin?!? Maniac! That's not just whiskey money, it's CROWN ROYAL money! Wail it!!
Congratulations, you more than deserve it. xoxoxo

That is WICKED!!!! Next video is you playing yours. Don't make me come up there. And you stole it!! Good job! I would have to pay in nickels-see how healthy you got?!? All that library time done made ya smart. Mod it, I kill ya. If you get the urge, take the SG apart and put it back together with your eyes closed, especially since I already told somebody you could.

Re: NGD...Godin Belmont...

Well I had a chance a few days back to clean and set-up the guitar. I took off the old strings which have seen their day and I did a thorough cleaning of the fret board with soap & water and a rag to wipe off all the gunk that was built up on it. I polished the frets with Brasso so now they look shiny and sleek. I cleaned the FB again with just water and let it dry for a bit. I then applied FB lemon oil on the entire fret board and let it soak for a good 20 minutes or so. I repeated this process a couple of more times and the fret board feels and looks silky smooth. I also took off the pick guard so I could clean the pick ups which were a bit dirty. I took the neck off to see if the neck pocket was clean and it sure was. I wrapped plumber's tape around the neck screws so it would make better contact with the body and better tone transfer. I put on a fresh set of strings (Ernie Ball Slinky 10-46) and what a difference now in sound...it's very sparkly and resonant.

I did a pick up height adjustment on all pick ups for optimal tone. I usually press the high "E" string at the 22nd fret and measure 1/16" from the top of the pick up to the bottom of the string. I did the same on the low "E" side but measured 1/8". The guitar really sounds great now and all the pick ups have such clarity playing it through my Fender Twin Reverb amplifier. I find all 5 positions on the selector switch very usable and the variety of tones I get is very satisfactory. I really love the Duncan '59 in the bridge position and is great for distortion and it has some very rich harmonics. The SD Lipstick sound fabulous and very vintage. They have good bass to them and very articulate highs to their sound.

The neck feels really good on this guitar and I've been playing this Godin everyday now since I got it. Yesterday I finally got out my '98 Fender American Std. Strat just for a while and I was so surprised on how fat the neck felt compared to my Godin guitar. It's a very comfortable guitar to play and the neck feels perfect. I would highly recommend this guitar to anyone in the market for another guitar...Godins are very high quality and most models feature Seymour Duncan pick ups which is a real bonus. You can say I'm a happy camper at this point.:)

Re: NGD...Godin Belmont...

Well I've just set up an account on Imgur and was able to take photos of my guitar. The photos were transferred to Google Photos where I copied the links to Imgur so here are some actual pictures of my Godin Belmont.

Wow! I dig the big pics. Godins are wonderful guitars, aren't they?

Re: NGD...Godin Belmont...

Sweet looking axe. Not that mine is in bad shape but yours is definitely cleaner. And if you get a chance the series/single/split wiring really adds a lot more versatility to it. Fwiw I’ll probably be selling mine soon. I’ve decided to go a different direction and it’s just been sitting in the case more than being used. So it deserves someone who will enjoy it.

They sure are Mincer and it's my first Seymour Duncan equipped guitar. I've been playing it practically everyday since I got it and after a good set up and string change this guitar just rings with sustain. It's also very heavy maybe because of a denser mahogany body and of course the Bigsby vibrato unit adds some weight. How is yours holding up?

I might consider your suggestion of a series/single/split wiring because I know the Duncan '59 is more powerful than the SD Tube Lipstick pick ups. But in the meantime I did lower the height of the '59 pick up so it would match more the other pick ups and I also adjust the volume when switching to the bridge pup. Overall I'm fairly happy with all the sounds I get out of this guitar so it's no big issue for me. Hopefully you'll find a guitar enthusiast that will buy your Godin...good luck.;)

Re: NGD...Godin Belmont...

Yeah it wasn’t a total mismatch before the switch. But the cleaner the sound the more noticeable it was to me. There were these big clean glassy smooth lipsticks and then this mid forward punchy bridge pickup. I messed around with heights. I had even tried another pickup in it, but still wasn’t totally happy. So one day I decided to try parallel wiring and it was perfect. Still big and bold but not as mid forward with a touch more air. However series (stock) was cool too. Especially for medium gain and higher. So since I wanted to add a switch, I might as well add the 3rd option. So series/split/parallel it was. Anyway there’s not a ton of space to place it. I put it above the 5 way, right where the route starts to go up to the bridge pickup. Feels good and is far enough away from the bigsby for me.

Also I’m not terribly inclined to sell. It’s a cool guitar. I’ve just acquired some others, two with rosewood necks, and those get the attention these days. So for the guitars sake I should sell it. Maybe someday haha.
