NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

I own quite a few guitars but I finally bought my first Hagstrom guitar and it plays amazing! It's a set neck semi-hollow body guitar that is contoured on both top and back. I bought it in a pawn shop for under $700 and I did a cash and carry deal so I didn't pay any taxes. It's almost like a Gibson ES-335 clone. It comes with a beautiful hard shell tweed case. The string action on the guitar is fairly low without any string buzz. It has an H-Expander truss rod that is thin but sturdy and it runs the entire length of the fret board which allows for low action and it's a sturdy neck. It has great sustain and attack to it's tone.

The fret board is a resonator wood composite material that looks and feels like ebony. It's more uniform in density than any standard wood product. These characteristics eliminate any dead spots or "wolf tones" and provides a stable and clear tone. The fret board comes with block pearl inlays with rounded corners which looks classy. I just love the feel of the fret board! The machine heads on the head stock are very high quality and are an 18:1 gear ratio. I love the ridged look of the tuning keys.

The guitar features a Tremar vibrato unit that is similar to a Bigsby. It stays incredibly in tune and it has that vintage vibe. The bridge is a Tune-O-Matic roller bridge so the strings don't go out of tune. The nut on the guitar is a self-lubricating GraphTech TUSQ XL nut which compliments the bridge in tuning stability. Here are the following overall specs of the guitar:

BODY:
- Material: Ply Flamed Maple
- Top & Back: Contoured
- Style: Semi-Hollow Body

- Joint: Set Neck
- Radius: 15"

- Scale Length: 24.75"

- Nut Width: 43mm

ELECTRONICS:

- Pickup Selector: 3-way toggle switch
- Controls: 2 X Volume/ 2 X Tone

I would have to say that if anyone is in the market for buying another guitar, this guitar is the ultimate bang for the buck. Once you pick one up, you'll never want to put it down. This guitar is a work of art and I'm taking it to the grave with me. Here are some pictures to follow.

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

looks great. how does it sound?

The guitar sounds great! The pick ups are well balanced and sparkling sounding. Since the guitar is made of mostly maple, it has a brighter sound than mahogany. I own a Fender Twin Reverb amp and plugging my Hagstrom into it sounds like pure heaven.

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

I have the more basic Hagstrom. Great guitars really....but necks a bit on the slim side for my taste. Doesn't stop them sounding great and being one of the best budget 335 styles out there.

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

Congrats!!! I played one of the LP styles (Swede?) a few years back and liked it quite a bit..

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

similar to grover imperials or super rotomatics. they use the same tuner buttons but the supers have a 14:1 ratio and normal size case vs the large oversized imperials with a 16:1 ratio

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

Are those Grover tuners?

Haven't seen that style in forever...

I believe they are Hagstrom's own tuners because the name is on the back of the tuners. I also believe they are an 18:1 gear if I'm not mistaken.:33:

Here's a video of demonstrating the Viking sound. The Guitar World video shows it real well.

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

Awesome guitar! I had the baritone version with a P90 in the neck position. I think the tuners are 18:1, made by Schaller.

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

I very nearly bought one of these last week, definitely beautiful guitars!!!! One of my amp's had sold while I was shopping around for a Semi-Hollow which allowed me to get something a little more pricey as main Semi-Hollow (a Gibson Midtown Standard) & get a cheaper import as well. For my secondary Semi I went with a Gretsch 2622 Streamliner V-Tail instead of the Hagstrom, because I liked the way it resonated better & the stock pickups had a little more snap.

To be perfectly honest I think I like the way it resonates better than the Gibson Midtown & it was only a third of the price!!! Considering how close they are in their designs they are actually pretty different from each other? The Gibson sounds more like a chambered L.P. Florentine or something like that, (kinda somewhere between a solid body & semi-hollow) whereas the Gretsch has a much more open and classic Semi-Hollow sound....

The Viking I was looking at was basically exactly the same as what you've got but without the Bigsby. They're beautiful guitars & I absolutely love the composite fingerboards! They look, feel, & sound almost exactly like Ebony but a hell of a lot more durable!!! Plus the truss design in those is just phenomenal!!! It lets you get shred stick neck thinness but its stronger than most vintage Gibson necks.

Congrats on your new accusation dude, admittedly I'm a little jealous.........

The Gibson Midtown Standard is a routed out solid mahogany body rather than a laminate body. Not that it's a bad thing, just that it may explain why it's quite a bit different than a "traditional" semi-hollow.

Re: NGD...Hagstrom Viking Deluxe.

Congrats mate! I own an early reissue Swede and their necks are absolutely magic.

That Bigsbyish term looks like a bullet proof work of art and I'm sure it plays that way.
