Just got this in the mail today.
I love Les Pauls, the look and feel is just awesome. I've had a few in the past and loved playing them except none of the pickups I put in it sounded good. After several pickup swaps I realized it wasn't the pickups I didn't like, it was the mahogany. This was rather devastating since all the real LP's were mahogany and 99% of the knock offs are too. To make things worse, I'm left handed. It also seems like any pickup I put in my soloist style guitars sounds good and those are basswood or alder.
I found this kit from Bargain Musician for $140. I know that this is a cheap guitar in all aspects but it's exactly what I want. It's left handed, basswood body, flame maple veneer, set maple neck, rosewood fret board, and inlays that start on 3 rather than 1. I haven't figured out what pickups I want in it yet. This guitar will be a middle-of-the-road guitar, medium output so I'm open to suggestions. I do know that since I never use the tone control I'm going to have the top 2 controls be volumes and the bottom 2 coil split switches. I'll use electronics I gutted out of better guitars since the stuff in the bag looks rather bottom of the barrel (I love my tackle box of spare parts). I'm going to do either a green or black stain, black back, probably wont do a burst.
I'll keep everyone posted on the progress.
