NGD - LTD EC-401

I got it last week, but I hadn't posted this until now. This is an EC-401 from 2014 that I got in a trade for an Ibby. My dream guitar has always been a Les Paul Custom, and this is kind of in the ballpark, although not really. Either way, it plays great, the build quality is great, but most of all, it sounds INCREDIBLE. Nice and chunky. The way a set neck mahogany guitar should. It's also REALLY lightweight, which is surprising, because it sounds soooooo huge.

I posted a thread about pickup suggestions for it not long ago, but in the end, I ended up slapping my favorite set of pickups that I removed from another guitar because I like it so much that I want to make it my number one. It's a set of Black Winters that sound really great in it.

I'll post some more pics of it tonight when I get home, but for now, this is a not-so-great shot of it.

Re: NGD - LTD EC-401

HNGD, Sir! I have a 2011 LTD EC1000 and I can say, LTD's are some of the best guitars for the money out there :1:

Re: NGD - LTD EC-401

Those EC-ltd's are the schiz!

If I were not a Les Paul / Cadillac man, I'd be ALL over those!

Thank you, dudes!

I was actually surprised that this is made in Korea. I was under the impression the 400 series was Indonesian, at least for a while. But yeah, it's definitely good quality, no doubt.

Nice guitar, also keep us posted in the Black Winter thread! I bought a 400-series in late 2017 (LTD H-401M), off Fleabay, and it was made in Indonesia. Came with a Jazz neck & Custom-5 bridge; it actually sounded pretty good, but the overall quality was not what I expected for an LTD (I've owned several others), and so I sent it back. Those EC models do look sharp though, nice catch!

Thanks, man!

This is it with my PRS SE baritone that I got not too long ago:

Both have got Black Winters in the bridge position.

The earlier ones were korean made, the 400 series were very nice guitars because they usually had quality hardware in them, bridge, nut, tuners, pickups, all were great. They had models that came with emg 81/85 set or usa duncan pickups. The prices were simply great on these. I wish i had gotten one of them back then.

Re: NGD - LTD EC-401

Nice guitar! These typically came with the active 81/60 set. Not 81/85.

A few years back I had a black MIK EC-500. I ended up selling it because the neck was a bit too thin for my taste at the time, and I felt the body was too thin as well. The belly cut on it made it even worse.
I also didn't like the 81/60 set in that guitar. The 81 was tight and clear, but also very thin sounding in it.

Because of the other things I didn't like about the guitar, I determined a pickup swap wasn't a viable option. Also, my 2001 MIK Viper 301 that I had (& still have) sounded and played better than the EC-500. So, off it went.

I've tried the LTD ECs again since but they still aren't ideal for me. The past few years I've turned to the Schecter SOLO-II for my modern MIK LP needs. Fantastic guitars.

I bet yours sounds great with the BW set though.

Re: NGD - LTD EC-401

Well, I actually believe this one is also sort of an anomally, I don't know if it's because of the unusual light weight. I like heavy full LP-thickness guitars as well, but for some reason, this is one is throatier and warmer than my full-thickness PRS SE Singlecut. It's not really bassier, mind you, but it's just more muscular and overall bigger-sounding.

And yeah, I've played those old 300 series LTD's. Fantastic guitars. I've had an LTD F-205 bass which was made in the same factory around the early 2000's for nearly 15 years, and man, I love that bass. I'm never getting rid of it.

This one came with the 81/60 set stock, but the previous owner swapped them out for a set of Distortions. The original plan was for him to keep his Distortions, but I ended up buying them off him as well, lol, so I'm gonna drop them in my PRS SE Nick Catanese, and, well, this one got a set of Black Winters.

Re: NGD - LTD EC-401

Nice guitar!
Yea theyre among the best guitars for the buck out there currently and they hold their own in most situations... That's being said I wouldn't be surprised if it would out perform a LP Custom so don't feel like you sold yourself short by going for this as opposed to saving up for a LPC.
