NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

This guitar was posted on one of the Facebook buy/sell/trade pages i frequent. I offered him a the fully upgraded Mexican Strat, which i had posted on here and he accepted with a little cash from me. I am very VERY excited i picked this up. It needs some minor work, but overall, its in fantastic shape. Tone and play-ability to match

This is an Edwards John Sykes model Les Paul Made in Japan. This thing even feels like a true Gibson, especially with the ebony fretboard. Just fantastic. The frets could use a level/crown but they have tons of meat left on them. The previous owner took the pickguard off and forgot to ship it, but it will be in the mail tomorrow he said. Has the Duncan Distortion Mayhem set, which i am actually quite surprised by. The neck pickup is a bit too high output but it does have a much better tone than i was expecting. However, i will probably be replacing it with something down the road.

I will be replacing the nut (brass-this one is shot), output jack, pots (CTS 500k tone and volume), maybe some bumble bee caps, knobs (like the originals-this are some **** replacements), and real metal chrome'd pickup rings.

Here it is in its current state. I did removed the pickup logos to make it look more like the true Sykes Les Paul. Gave it a good polish as well. Needs a setup (minor), but overall this thing impressed me a ton. Very glad i made this trade.

I could go 2 routes with this thing. Chime in if you have an opinion/idea. First is install the 80s Gibson Dirty Fingers pickup i have lying around and the other is to replace the pickups with nickel covered SH-15 Alternative 8 in the bridge and a MJ-wound mildly-potted Seth Lover with somewhat relec'd nickel cover. thoughts?

Here are the pics-

Frickin beautiful

Nice trade for mexistrat

Why'd you take the Seymour logo off the pups if you aren't keeping em in?

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

I have more than a couple L.Ps. Some with covered pickups, some not. I think on that one uncovered would look perfect.

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

undecided if i am going to keep them in or not. most likely not, but it looks so much better without the logos, much like Sykes' real LP from the 80s with the dual Dirty fingers pups in it. Just looks better for the time being.

Awsome!! I had one of those a few years back.. Wish I hadnt sold it... Would LOVE another!!!

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

Awesome score! Looks great Will you add a poker chip to the switch, or keep it as is? My buddy is on a Japanese Lp kick as well. He just bought a older Orville from their golden era. He loves the thing, and has a set of Custom Shop SD pickups that he planned to stick in there, but hasn't done it yet because the stock pickups sound pretty good for the music he is playing, why fix what isn't broken?

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

yeah, mine had a mirror poker chip too.
Love Japanese LPs myself.. Loved the Edwards and I still have an old Burny. Heavy as a heck tho

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

The Edwards was something I was seriously considering as a great alternative for a LPC easily available for lefties......I started building my own otherwise I'd have one.

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

Beautiful looking Custom. Japan really does reproduce some quality Les Paul clones, for very reasonable prices. I would actually like to own a Tokai Love Rock someday.

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

Sadly, as with everything, the pricing is climbing.. They used to be a good bit cheaper than the Gibbies, but not so much any more.. (new pricing)

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

Ordered some new parts for this beast: new Chrome poker chip, silver/black tophat knobs, and some real chrome/metal pickup mounting rings. OG pickguard is on its way-the guy forgot to send it with the guitar.

Probably will swap pickups when the time comes-SH15/Alt 8 in the bridge, Seth Lover in the neck. now the question is should i leave the covers on or would that be to much of a chrome/shinny onslaught?

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

Installed an 80's Gibson Dirty Fingers in the bridge and a vintage MJ wound Alnico II pro in the neck. installed the chrome pickup rings as well as the chrome poker chip. Still waiting on previous owner to send the pickguard, which he still has. Pics will be posted when it is complete.

Re: NGD-My love for MIJ Les Paul's keeps growing...

I have an Edwards P90 LPC which a previous owner put a customshop SD staple neck pickup into; now I miss my '54 RI that got ripped off back in the 70s less than I used to.

I love the MIJs and have a number of them - sweet guitars.
