NGD - PRS Custom 24: New p'ups or not? (w/ Pics)

Most all my guitars have gotten Duncan p'ups swapped in:
  • Les Paul (Custom/PGn) - Strat (Hot/Vintage/Cool Rails) - Ibanez RG570 (Alt8/STK-4/SD) - Ibanez RGD7321 (Nazgul/Sentient) - Schecter C-1 (C8/59-A4)

So this just might be the first time I leave the stock p'ups in... I haven't made up my mind yet. The guitar came with the 57/08 pickups. They're extremely responsive to the touch... they have relatively low output compared to my other pickups, but they sound fantastic! So a question for all you tone kings out there... if you had a choice of p'ups to put into this guitar, what would they be?

Oh... and here's a couple pics for you. \\m//

Depends if were talking Hard rock/metal it would be a set of PATB-1 or 3 or the Dimebucker or Alt 8. If were talking about more vintage maybe a set of WLH or a set of Seths.

Outside of Duncans would be a Bill Lawrence L500 and L90.

How about just using a clean boost after them to push the output a bit?

Holy Hell! That's one smokin' guitar! I literally had to catch my breath! Congratulations!!!

As for pickups... if this was my guitar (and man, do I wish it was) I'd go with a Whole Lotta Humbucker in the Bridge and an Alnico II Pro (non-Slash) in the neck. If I wanted more heat, 59/custom hybrid with a 59n.

Beautiful Custom 24! I love mine, but I hated the PRS pups. I understand the 57/08's are their best, but the output is too low for me. The 59/09's and the HFS/VB set were way too upper mids for my rig. I use Marshalls exclusively and the upper mid focus of the amp, combined with the PRS pups made for a nasal, honky tone.

Not wanting to give up on my PRS, I tried a number of different pups until I found the DiMarzio Transitions. They are mid-scooped, clear, articulate with enough bite. They saved the guitar for me. Did not look into SD pups at the time I replaced, but if it were me, I'd look for a mid-scooped pickup because the Custom 24's are known for honky tone.

Hope this helps and PS - if the SD users have any pickup suggestions for eliminating honky, nasal with a Custom 24, I'd be interested. The one issue with the DiMarzio's is they can have a bit of hair/fuzz that is not as desirable as a smoother SD pickup. Thanks!

Play it a while first and get a feel for the guitar and allow the original pups time to develop within your ear. Paul has a good ear for pickups and pickup design.

Given that, how about a Custom 5 in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck?

Having a PRS, I agree with this

I had 57/08s in my Custom 24. They are fabulous pick ups. I agree with what others said, play with them a bit. If you want to amp up in power a bit, replace the bridge pup with a 59/09. I actually did that, and then went up a notch further to the Tremonti bridge. All are excellent pick ups, depending on what you play and what you want to do. (And your amp, etc.) The 57/08 neck pup is probably never coming out of that guitar though.

I'd leave the PRS as it is. But if I had a choice for replacing pickups, I'd go with lower output ones since the rest of your guitars is already at hotter spectrum. It could be Seth set, Slash set, WLH set, Phat Cat set or PATB-3 - PATB-1 set.

I also have the same problem. Very mid 59/09's fitted in my PRS. Want to change pickups but I can't find the prs colour codes. Also prs pups have 3 wires. Aghhh anyone help?Screenshot_2014-09-15-22-41-24-1.jpg
